Under an amendment to the ''Parliament of Canada Act'' which came into force on January 19, 2019, no writ for the election of a member of the House shall be issued if the vacancy occurs less than nine months before the date fixed under the ''Canada Elections Act'' for the holding of a general election. However, Di Iorio missed the deadline he set for himself and did not submit his resignation for another week, on January 29.
