Sharikat Naft Al-Basra
Sharikat Naft Al-Basra ( ar, فريق شركة نفط البصرة, lit=Basra Petroleum Company), known as BPC for short, was an Iraqi football team based in Basra. They became Iraq's first ever national cup winners when they won the 1948–49 Iraq FA Cup that was played between teams from across the country. They competed regularly in the Iraq FA Basra League, a regional league for teams in Basra, winning the title in 1949–50 and 1950–51, finishing as runners-up in 1948–49 and finishing third in 1962–63 season. The team was dissolved in 1968. Iraq FA Basra League
The Iraq FA Basra League ( ar, دوري الاتحاد العراقي لمنطقة البصرة) was the top-level division of football in Basra between 1948 and 1973. It was controlled by the Basra branch of the Iraq Football Association and was one of four regional league championships played in Iraq at the time, with the others being in Baghdad, Kirkuk and Mosul. The first champions of the competition were Al-Minaa, who won the title in the 1948–49 season. The regional leagues folded in 1973 and were replaced by the Iraqi National First Division. Al-Minaa were the competition's most successful team with 15 titles. Basra
Basra ( ar, ٱلْبَصْرَة, al-Baṣrah) is an Iraqi city located on the Shatt al-Arab. It had an estimated population of 1.4 million in 2018. Basra is also Iraq's main port, although it does not have deep water access, which is handled at the port of Umm Qasr. However, there is ongoing constuction of Grand Faw Port on the coast of Basra, which is considered a national project for Iraq and will become one of the largest ports in the world and the largest in the Middle East, in addition, the port will strengthen Iraq’s geopolitical position in the region and the world. 1948–49 Iraq FA Cup
The 1948–49 Iraq Football Association Cup was the first edition of what is now the Iraq FA Cup. Clubs and institute-representative teams participated in the tournament, which was won by Sharikat Naft Al-Basra, beating Al-Kuliya Al-Askariya Al-Malakiya 2–1 in Iraq's first ever national cup final, played at Al-Kashafa Stadium in Baghdad on 7 April 1949. The winning team's players and staff paraded the trophy around Basra upon returning from Baghdad three days after winning the tournament. The 1949–50 Iraq FA Basra League was the second season of the Iraq FA Basra Premier League (the top division of football in Basra from 1948 to 1973) organised by the Basra branch of the Iraq Football Association. The tournament began on 19 October 1949, and the regular season ended in November 1949 with Sharikat Naft Al-Basra and Al-Ittihad qualifying for the final. 1948–49 Iraq FA Basra League
The 1948–49 Iraq FA Basra League was the first season of the Iraq FA Basra Premier League (the top division of football in Basra from 1948 to 1973), which was formed when the Basra branch of the newly founded Iraq Football Association took over the existing league competition in Basra (the Students League Cup). The competition started in November 1948, with the regular season being played in a round-robin format. Al-Minaa and Sharikat Naft Al-Basra qualified for the final in May 1949 by occupying the top two positions in the league table, and Al-Minaa were crowned inaugural Iraq FA Basra League champions with a 1–0 victory, preventing their opponents from completing a Basra League and Iraq FA Cup double. The 1962–63 Iraq FA Basra First Division (the top division of football in Basra) was organised by the Basra branch of the Iraq Football Association. Iraq FA Cup
The Iraq FA Cup, known as the Iraq Cup ( ar, كأس العراق) in Arabic, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic Iraqi football. First held in the 1948–49 season for clubs and institutions before returning in 1975–76 for clubs only, it is organised by the Iraq Football Association. The tournament begins with several rounds played between lower division clubs, twelve of which advance to the Round of 32, where the Iraqi Premier League clubs are entered. This is followed by the Round of 16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final which is played as a single leg in Baghdad. The winners of the competition are awarded a place in the next season's AFC Cup group stage as well as qualifying for the Iraqi Super Cup where they play against the league champions at the start of the following season (or the league runners-up, if the cup winners have won the double). Hanna Al-Sheikh Cup
Hanna Al-Sheikh Championship (also known as Hanna Al-Sheikh Cup) was the first known football competition in Basra, held annually. Six clubs in Basra were involved in the tournament. This tournament began in the 1945. The last season was in 1968 because the founder and sponsor of the competition migrated out of Iraq. Saeed Easho
Peter Saeed Easho Murad () (born 1928) is a former international Iraqi football player, who was one of the first players to play in first Iraq national football team, he also played for Al-Minaa, and with the reserve team of English club Manchester United during the 1960s. Early years Saeed Easho was the son of an Eastern Orthodox priest, who had settled in the city of Basra in the early 20th century from the heart of the old Ottoman Empire. Saeed excelled at football at his primary school in the district of Al-Ashar and at Thanawiya Al-Basra and was chosen to play for the Basra Select side while in school, taking on British Army sides based in the city during WWII. He had left the country to study but returned to work as a clerk for the Basra Petroleum Company (B.P.C.) and the Al-Minaa Club. Shaker Ismail
Shaker Ismail ( ar, شاكر إسماعيل, born 1927) is an Iraqi former international football player, who was one of the first players to play in first Iraq national football team. He also played for Al-Minaa. International career Ismail played against Iraq in April 1951 in a friendly match between Iraq national football team, and Basra Select XI. The Basra XI was composed of 10 players from Al-Minaa and Ismail from Sharikat Naft Al-Basra. Two of Basra’s players, Ismail and Karim Allawi, caught the eye of the coach Dhia Habib and were added to the squad, bound for Turkey. In April 1951, Ismail started playing for the first Iraq national football team, He was called by coach Dhia Habib to play in the first international friendly in the history of Iraqi football.
