1949–50 Iraq FA Basra League
The 1949–50 Iraq FA Basra League was the second season of the Iraq FA Basra Premier League (the top division of football in Basra from 1948 to 1973) organised by the Basra branch of the Iraq Football Association. The tournament began on 19 October 1949, and the regular season ended in November 1949 with Sharikat Naft Al-Basra and Al-Ittihad qualifying for the final. Sharikat Naft Al-Basra beat Al-Ittihad 5–1 in January 1950 to win the title for the first time. Iraq FA Basra Premier League
The Iraq FA Basra Premier League ( ar, دوري الاتحاد العراقي لمنطقة البصرة) was the top-level division of football in Basra between 1948 and 1973. It was controlled by the Basra branch of the Iraq Football Association and was one of several regional league championships played in Iraq at the time, with others including the Baghdad, Kirkuk and Mosul leagues. The first champions of the competition were Al-Minaa, who won the title in the 1948–49 season. The regional leagues folded in 1973 and were replaced by the Iraqi National First Division. Al-Minaa were the competition's most successful team with 15 titles. The Mahdi ( ar, ٱلْمَهْدِيّ, al-Mahdī, lit=the Guided) is a Final Leader in Islamic eschatology who is believed to appear at the end of times to rid the world of evil and injustice. Shaker Ismail
Shaker Ismail ( ar, شاكر إسماعيل, born 1927) is an Iraqi former international football player, who was one of the first players to play in first Iraq national football team. He also played for Al-Minaa. International career Ismail played against Iraq in April 1951 in a friendly match between Iraq national football team, and Basra Select XI. The Basra XI was composed of 10 players from Al-Minaa and Ismail from Sharikat Naft Al-Basra. Two of Basra’s players, Ismail and Karim Allawi, caught the eye of the coach Dhia Habib and were added to the squad, bound for Turkey. Percy Lynsdale
Percy Cyril Lynsdale ( ar, بيرسي لينزديل; born 1 July 1928) is an Iraqi former footballer who played as a forward. Born in Iraq to an Iraqi mother and a British father, Lynsdale was one of the first players to play for the Iraq national team. He played for Sharikat Naft Al-Basra and Al-Minaa at club level, before moving to England in 1951. Early life Lynsdale's roots lie in South London, then Surrey; one of his ancestors settled in India after joining the British Army in 1797. One hundred years later, Lynsdale's father Cyril was born; he moved to Baghdad, Iraq shortly after World War I, and married an Iraqi woman, gaining Iraqi citizenship. Born in Baghdad, Lynsdale lived for a period in Mosul due to his father's job in the Iraqi Railway company. In the early 1940s, Lynsdale studied at the Jesuit Baghdad College, and played football in the schoolyard. Sharikat Naft Al-Basra ( ar, فريق شركة نفط البصرة, lit=Basra Petroleum Company), known as BPC for short, was an Iraqi football team based in Basra. They became Iraq's first ever national cup winners when they won the 1948–49 Iraq FA Cup that was played between teams from across the country. Thanawiyat Al-Basra
Thanawiyat Al-Basra ( ar, فريق ثانوية البصرة, lit=Basra Secondary School), was an Iraqi football team based in Al-Ashar, Basra. The club was founded in the 1920s, and in 1931, the team played against the Bahrain national team in Basra and was able to defeat them with a score of 2–1. It was the first local Iraqi team to win over a national team. In 1942 a very strong team was formed by high school principal Yousef Saleh and sports teacher Hamoudi Al-Bader. The team played in the official tournaments that were held during that period, and was able to qualifying for the final and finishing as runners-up in the Iraq FA Basra Premier League in 1950–51 season. Al-Minaa
Al-Minaa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الميناء الرياضي, lit=Port Sports Club) is an Iraqi multi-sport club based in Al-Maqal, Basra that participates in the Iraq Division One, the second tier of Iraqi football. It is one of the most popular clubs in Iraq, particularly in the south, and became the first club outside Baghdad to win the Iraqi Premier League. Al-Minaa was founded on November 22, 1931, in Al-Maqal. In 1974, the club was merged with another team called Al-Bareed to form a single club called Al-Muwasalat, and it was a strange situation because the Al-Bareed team were based in Baghdad while Al-Minaa were based in Basra and the two teams met in Baghdad on the day of the match only, so after just one season the club was dissolved and Al-Minaa returned in their place.
