1948–49 Iraq FA Basra League
The 1948–49 Iraq FA Basra League was the first season of the Iraq FA Basra Premier League (the top division of football in Basra from 1948 to 1973), which was formed when the Basra branch of the newly founded Iraq Football Association took over the existing league competition in Basra (the Students League Cup). The competition started in November 1948, with the regular season being played in a round-robin format. Al-Minaa and Sharikat Naft Al-Basra qualified for the final in May 1949 by occupying the top two positions in the league table, and Al-Minaa were crowned inaugural Iraq FA Basra League champions with a 1–0 victory, preventing their opponents from completing a Basra League and Iraq FA Cup double. Iraq FA Basra Premier League
The Iraq FA Basra Premier League ( ar, دوري الاتحاد العراقي لمنطقة البصرة) was the top-level division of football in Basra between 1948 and 1973. It was controlled by the Basra branch of the Iraq Football Association and was one of several regional league championships played in Iraq at the time, with others including the Baghdad, Kirkuk and Mosul leagues. The first champions of the competition were Al-Minaa, who won the title in the 1948–49 season. The regional leagues folded in 1973 and were replaced by the Iraqi National First Division. Al-Minaa were the competition's most successful team with 15 titles. Al-Minaa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الميناء الرياضي, lit=Port Sports Club) is an Iraqi multi-sport club based in Al-Maqal, Basra that participates in the Iraq Division One, the second tier of Iraqi football. It is one of the most popular clubs in Iraq, particularly in the south, and became the first club outside Baghdad to win the Iraqi Premier League. Al-Minaa was founded on November 22, 1931, in Al-Maqal. In 1974, the club was merged with another team called Al-Bareed to form a single club called Al-Muwasalat, and it was a strange situation because the Al-Bareed team were based in Baghdad while Al-Minaa were based in Basra and the two teams met in Baghdad on the day of the match only, so after just one season the club was dissolved and Al-Minaa returned in their place. The 1949–50 Iraq FA Basra League was the second season of the Iraq FA Basra Premier League (the top division of football in Basra from 1948 to 1973) organised by the Basra branch of the Iraq Football Association. The tournament began on 19 October 1949, and the regular season ended in November 1949 with Sharikat Naft Al-Basra and Al-Ittihad qualifying for the final. Basra
Basra ( ar, ٱلْبَصْرَة, al-Baṣrah) is an Iraqi city located on the Shatt al-Arab. It had an estimated population of 1.4 million in 2018. Basra is also Iraq's main port, although it does not have deep water access, which is handled at the port of Umm Qasr. 1948–49 Iraq FA Cup
The 1948–49 Iraq Football Association Cup was the first edition of what is now the Iraq FA Cup. Clubs and institute-representative teams participated in the tournament, which was won by Sharikat Naft Al-Basra, beating Al-Kuliya Al-Askariya Al-Malakiya 2–1 in Iraq's first ever national cup final, played at Al-Kashafa Stadium in Baghdad on 7 April 1949. The winning team's players and staff paraded the trophy around Basra upon returning from Baghdad three days after winning the tournament. Sharikat Naft Al-Basra ( ar, فريق شركة نفط البصرة, lit=Basra Petroleum Company), known as BPC for short, was an Iraqi football team based in Basra. They became Iraq's first ever national cup winners when they won the 1948–49 Iraq FA Cup that was played between teams from across the country. Al-Ittihad Sport Club ( ar, نادي الاتحاد الرياضي), is an Iraqi football team based in Al-Ashar, Basra, that plays in Iraq Division Three. History Foundation and early years Al-Ittihad was founded in 1937 in the Al-Bachhari district, and it was the first administrative body headed by ''Nadhum Majeed''. In 1940, ''Tawfiq Al-Ainachi'' assumed the presidency of the club, and the club’s activity stopped at the outbreak of the World War II, and in 1945 the club resumed its activity, and it moved to a new location in the Al-Saee district. In the 1940s, the club was receiving direct support from Prince Abd al-Ilah. Thanawiyat Al-Basra
Thanawiyat Al-Basra ( ar, فريق ثانوية البصرة, lit=Basra Secondary School), was an Iraqi football team based in Al-Ashar, Basra. The club was founded in the 1920s, and in 1931, the team played against the Bahrain national team in Basra and was able to defeat them with a score of 2–1. It was the first local Iraqi team to win over a national team. In 1942 a very strong team was formed by high school principal Yousef Saleh and sports teacher Hamoudi Al-Bader. The team played in the official tournaments that were held during that period, and was able to qualifying for the final and finishing as runners-up in the Iraq FA Basra Premier League in 1950–51 season.
