Jorge Fernandes (swimmer)
Jorge Luiz Fernandes Leite (born 3 April 1962 in Rio de Janeiro) is a former international freestyle swimmer from Brazil, who participated in three consecutive Summer Olympics for his native country, starting in 1980. Participated at the 1978 World Aquatics Championships in West Berlin, where he finished 24th in the 100-metre freestyle, and 31st in the 200-metre freestyle. He was at the 1979 Pan American Games, in San Juan. He won a silver medal in the 4×200-metre freestyle. He also finished 6th in the 100-metre freestyle. He broke the South American record of the 4×200-metre freestyle. Fernandes won the bronze medal in the men's 4×200-metre freestyle relay event at the 1980 Summer Olympics, alongside Marcus Mattioli, Cyro Delgado, and Djan Madruga, with a time of 7:29.30. He also went to the 4×100-metre medley final, finishing 8th, and swam the 100-metre and 200-metre freestyle, not going to the final. 1983 Summer Universiade
The 1983 Summer Universiade, also known as the 1983 World University Games or XII Summer Universiade, took place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada between July 1 and 12, 1983. Over 2400 athletes from 73 countries participated. It was the first time Canada hosted these Games. Edmonton also hosted the 1978 Commonwealth Games. The event was marred by tragedy from the death of Soviet diver Sergei Chalibashvili when he died eight days after hitting his head on the 10 m diving platform in competition while attempting a reverse 3½ in the tuck position. Djan Garrido Madruga (born 7 December 1958 in Rio de Janeiro) is a former international freestyle swimmer and former South American record-holder from Brazil. His younger brother Roger Madruga, was also a professional swimmer. Early life At 6 years of age, Djan Madruga usually played on Copacabana Beach with a friend. As a result of him nearly drowning, his father Dirceu Madruga enrolled him in the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) swimming school at Urca. He wanted his son to be able to play in the water safely, but soon Djan Madruga's instructor realized that the boy had a gift for swimming and recommended him for the Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas team. Cyro Marques Delgado (born 11 May 1961 in União da Vitória) is a Brazilian former freestyle swimmer. He was at the 1979 Pan American Games, in San Juan. He won silver in the 4×200-metre freestyle, and bronze in the 4×100-metre freestyle. He also finished 4th in the 4×100-metre medley. He broke the South American record in all three events. At the 1980 Summer Olympics, in Moscow, he won a bronze medal in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay, with a time of 7:29.30, along Jorge Fernandes, Marcus Mattioli and Djan Madruga.
