Yekaterina Khodatovich-Karsten
Ekaterina Karsten ( be, Кацярына Карстэн, ''Kaciaryna Karsten''; russian: Екатерина Карстен; born 2 June 1972) is a Belarusian rower, a seven-time Olympian and first medalist from Republic of Belarus, a two-time Olympic champion and six-time World Champion in the single scull. Karsten won Olympic gold in the single sculls in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens she won a silver medal and in 2008 in Beijing she picked up a bronze. She also won at the World Championships in single sculls in 1997, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009, was runner up in 2002 and 2010 and got bronze in 2001 and 2003. She won the European Championships in 2009 and 2010. She won the world junior championships in 1990. A single scull (or a scull) is a rowing boat designed for a single person who propels the boat with two oars, one in each hand. Racing boats (often called "shells") are long, narrow, and broadly semi-circular in cross-section in order to minimize drag. They have riggers, which apply the forces symmetrically to each side of the boat and (usually) a fin towards the rear which helps prevent roll and yaw. Originally made from wood, shells are now almost always made from a composite material (usually carbon-fibre reinforced plastic) for strength and weight advantages. The Thomas Eakins Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (also known as the HOSR or the HOS) is a rowing race held annually during the last weekend in October on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The HOSR is the final race in the Fall Fury series, which includes the Head of the Ohio and the Head of the Connecticut. European Rowing Championships
The European Rowing Championships is an international Rowing regatta organised by FISA (the International Rowing Federation) for European rowing nations, plus Israel which, though not a member of the European federation is treated as a European nation for competition purposes. The championships date back to 1893, the year after FISA was founded. Over time, the competition grew in status and as it was not restricted to European countries, became regarded as the quasi-world championships. The World Rowing Championships were commenced in 1962 and the last European Championships were held in 1973 as from 1974, the World Championships became an annual event.
