2010 World Rowing Championships
The 2010 World Rowing Championships were World Rowing Championships that were held from 31 October to 7 November 2010 on Lake Karapiro near Cambridge, New Zealand. The annual week-long rowing regatta was organised by FISA (the International Rowing Federation). Usually held at the end of the northern hemisphere summer, they were held later in the year in the southern hemisphere. In non-Olympic years the regatta is the highlight of the international rowing calendar. Background The World Rowing Championships were previously held at Lake Karapiro in 1978. Rowing's international body said Lake Karapiro's 2010 World Rowing Championships raised the bar for the rest of the world and more international events would be held there. Lake Karapiro
Lake Karapiro () is an artificial reservoir lake on the Waikato River at Karapiro, south-east of Cambridge in New Zealand's North Island. The lake was formed in 1947 by the damming of the Waikato River to store water for the 96-megawatt Karapiro power station. The lake is also one of two premier rowing venues in New Zealand (alongside Lake Ruataniwha in Canterbury) and is the base for the country's high-performance rowing programme. History and etymology In about 1600, Te Ihingarangi built a pā (fortified village) called Te Tiki o Ihingarangi near where Lake Karapiro is today. In 1830 Ngāti Hauā defeated Ngāti Maru in a battle at Taumatawīwī, two kilometres south of Karapiro Domain. On the orders of the Ngāti Hauā chief Te Waharoa, his dead warriors were cremated, this taking place on rocks beside the Waikato River, the location then becoming known as ''Karāpiro'', from the Māori language words , meaning "basaltic stone", and , meaning "foul smelling". Valent Sinković
Valent Sinković (born 2 August 1988) is a Croatian rower. He is the older brother of rower Martin Sinković with whom he won the gold medal in Men's double sculls at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. He had previously won the silver in the men's quadruple sculls at the 2012 Summer Olympics with his brother, David Šain and Damir Martin. The Sinković brothers were the first men's double sculls team to go under 6 minutes for their race time. Sinković followed his brothers, Matija and Martin, into rowing after injury stopped him playing football. Martin and Valent have been racing together internationally since 2008. In 2008 they won silver in the double sculls at the under-23s World Championships. In 2009 they, along with David Šain and Damir Martin, won gold in the quadruple sculls at the under-23 World Championships. Damir Martin
Damir Martin (born 14 July 1988) is a Croatian rower. He won silver in the men's single scull at the 2016 Olympics losing to Mahé Drysdale in a photo finish and beating the multiple time world champion Ondřej Synek. David Šain (born 8 February 1988 in Osijek) is a Croatian rower. He is an Olympic silver medalist in the men's quadruple sculls, having won silver at the 2012 Summer Olympics with Martin Sinković, Damir Martin and Valent Sinković. Matthew Wells (born 19 April 1979) is a British Olympic Rowing (sport), rower. He has competed in multiple Olympic Games and World Championships, and won a bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Biography Matthew Wells was born in Bradford and grew up in Hexham, where he learnt to row on the River Tyne as a pupil at Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham, Queen Elizabeth High School. Joseph Sullivan (rower)
Joseph Sullivan (born 11 April 1987) is a New Zealand rower. As a student at Queen Charlotte College in Picton, Sullivan competed at the 2003, 2004 and 2005 national secondary school rowing championships (Maadi Cup). He was a member of the crews that won the boys under-18 double sculls for the school three years running, and won the boys under-18 single sculls events in 2004 and 2005. In his home town, he is known as "the pride of Picton". Nathan Cohen (rower)
Nathan Phillip Cohen (born 2 January 1986) is a New Zealand rower. He is a two-time world champion, and won a gold medal in the Olympics. In 2006, rowing a single scull, he won a gold medal at the World University Games. In doing so, he became the first New Zealander to win a gold medal at the World University Games in any sport. Cohen and his rowing partner, Joseph Sullivan, won back-to-back gold medals in the men's double sculls at both the 2010 and 2011 World Rowing Championships. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he and his partner won the gold medal in the men's double sculls, after breaking the Olympic best time in the heats.
