Rotsee
__NOTOC__ The Rotsee (previously known as Rootsee) is a natural rowing lake on the northern edge of Lucerne, Switzerland. It is regarded as one of the best rowing venues in the world. Description and location The lake and its surrounding area is used for local recreation. All of the lake frontage is a protected area. The lake formed through glacial processes and it is thought that the river Reuss flowed through this valley in between ice ages. There is no notable inflow and virtually no current. Nearby hills protect the lake from wind. It is long. These factors make it an ideal rowing venue and German-speaking rower refer to it as ''Göttersee'', which translates as "lake of the gods". The expression was coined at the 1962 World Rowing Championships by a Japanese rowing official. The Zug–Lucerne railway is located north of the lake. Andreas Hajek (born 16 April 1968 in Weißenfels) is a retired German rower. At the 1986 World Rowing Championships, he replaced a sick Thomas Lange Thomas Lange (born 27 February 1964) is a German rower who won two gold and one bronze Olympic medals in the single sculls. Lorenzo Carboncini (born 22 September 1976) is an Italian rower who has competed at four Olympic Games. Biography His best result came at the 2000 Summer Olympics, where he won the silver medal as part of the Italian men's coxless four. Before that in 1996, he competed in the men's eight at the Olympics, finishing in 9th place. In 2008 he competed as part of the men's coxless four again, this time finishing in 11th. Neil Chugani
Neil Chugani (born 16 January 1969) is a former cox for the GB rowing team. He won the gold medal at the 2001 World Rowing Championships in the Coxed Pair (with James Cracknell and Matthew Pinsent). Chugani began his rowing career at St Catherine's College, Oxford, from there he coxed the victorious Oxford crew in the 1991 Boat Race. Sir Matthew Clive Pinsent, (; born 10 October 1970) is an English rower and broadcaster. During his rowing career, he won 10 world championship gold medals and four consecutive Olympic gold medals. Since retiring, he has worked as a sports broadcaster for the BBC. James Cracknell
James Edward Cracknell, (born 5 May 1972) is a British athlete, rowing champion and double Olympic gold medalist. Cracknell was appointed OBE for "services to sport" in the 2005 New Year Honours List. Biography Cracknell began rowing whilst attending the independent Kingston Grammar School and rowed at the Junior World Championships in 1989 and 1990, winning a gold medal in 1990. He graduated from the University of Reading as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Human Geography in 1993, followed by a PGCE at the Institute of Education and a Master of Science (MSc) from Brunel University in 1999. Moving into the senior squad, Cracknell made numerous appearances in the World Rowing Championships; however, he did not win any medals prior to the 1996 Summer Olympics. Michiel Bernhard Emiel Marie Bartman (born 19 May 1967 in Badhoevedorp, North Holland) is a former rower from the Netherlands, who won a total of three Olympic medals during his career. A member of the Nereus Rowing Club from Amsterdam, he won the gold medal in Atlanta with the ''Holland Acht'' (Holland Eights), followed by silver in Sydney (Quadruple Sculls) and silver (Eights) once again in Athens. He also won three medals at the World Championships, bronze in the coxed four in 1994, silver with the ''Holland Acht'' in 1995 and silver in the Quadruple Sculls in 2001.
