World Vision India, headquartered in Chennai, is a christian charitable organisation, registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act of Tamil Nadu 1975. The organisation's primary stated goals are Child and Social Welfare. History It all began in 1947, when Robert (Bob) Pierce began supporting White Jade, a little girl in an orphanage in China, who was abandoned by her parents. Bob gave the warden, Tena Hoelkedoer, his last five dollars and agreed to send the same amount each month to help care for the girl. In 1950, Bob Pierce started World Vision. The child sponsorship programme began in response to the needs of hundreds of thousands of orphans of the Korean War. 1977 Andhra Pradesh Cyclone
The 1977 Andhra Pradesh cyclone was a devastating tropical cyclone that hit Andhra Pradesh in November 1977, killing at least 10,000 people.The storm in Orissa. The island of Diviseema, which was hit by a seven-metre-high () storm surge, experienced a loss of life running into the thousands. A storm surge, storm flood, tidal surge, or storm tide is a coastal flood or tsunami-like phenomenon of rising water commonly associated with low-pressure weather systems, such as cyclones. It is measured as the rise in water level above the normal tidal level, and does not include waves. The main meteorological factor contributing to a storm surge is high-speed wind pushing water towards the coast over a long fetch. Other factors affecting storm surge severity include the shallowness and orientation of the water body in the storm path, the timing of tides, and the atmospheric pressure drop due to the storm. Robert Pierce
Robert Pierce (1914–1978) was an American Baptist minister and relief worker. He is best known as the founder of the international charity organizations World Vision International in 1950 and Samaritan's Purse in 1970. Early life and education Pierce was born on October 8, 1914, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He moved with his family to southern California in the mid-1920s. He attended Pasadena Nazarene College and studied for the ministry. From 1937 to 1940 he spent time traveling across California working as an evangelist.
