William R. Young
William R. Young (born 2 June 1947) is a Canadian civil servant, who was the Parliamentary Librarian of Canada from 2005 to 2011. He is a former Canadian academic and public servant. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Young grew up in Woodbridge just outside the city. As seventh Parliamentary Librarian of Canada, Young was one of the three deputy heads responsible for the administration of Parliament, where he managed research, information, public outreach and education. During his term, he presided over the final phase of the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Library of Parliament, a Canadian architectural masterpiece. He also initiated an organizational renewal, refocused services to Parliament and the public and he was recognized by the Inter-parliamentary Union, among others, for his work promoting innovation and collaboration approaches in legislative research and information services internationally. Parliamentary Librarian Of Canada
The Parliamentary Librarian of Canada is one of the key officials of the Parliament of Canada. While the Library of Parliament was created shortly after 1867, the role of librarian was not created until 1871 to be in charge of management and control of the library of Parliament. Control and direction of the library is provided by the Speakers of the House of Commons and the Senate. The current role was created from the merger of the Parliamentary Librarians of the Provinces of Canada (1840-1867) and those of the Legislature of Upper and Lower Canada (1790s). Woodbridge is a very large suburban community in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, along the city's border with Toronto. The Library of Parliament (french: Bibliothèque du Parlement) is the main information repository and research resource for the Parliament of Canada. The main branch of the library sits at the rear of the Centre Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario. The library survived the Centre Block#Great fire, 1916 fire that destroyed Centre Block. The library has been augmented and renovated several times since its construction in 1876, the last between 2002 and 2006, though the form and decor remain essentially authentic.
