Westmeath Intermediate Football Championship
Westmeath Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition organised by Westmeath GAA between Gaelic football clubs in County Westmeath. The winner of the competition qualifies to represent the county in the Leinster Intermediate Club Football Championship, the winner of which progresses to the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Football Championship. The top club is promoted to the Westmeath Senior Football Championship, while the bottom club is relegated to the Westmeath Junior Football Championship. History In its early years, the competition was more transitional, with Caulry winning against Tyrrellspass in the 1946 IFC final and qualifying for the senior championship in the same year. The 1973 final was held at Páirc Chiaráin in Athlone, the first major championship final held there in more than two decades. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. Midlands 103 (previously known as Midlands Radio 3) is an Irish local independent radio station broadcasting to counties Laois, Offaly, and Westmeath. Tyrrellspass GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the town of Tyrrellspass in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. History The team was founded in 1961 and participates in both men's and women's leagues. The team won the Westmeath Senior Football Championship in 1999, 2006 and defended their title in 2007. Garrycastle GAA
Garrycastle is a Gaelic football club from the town of Athlone in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. The club was founded in 1981 after GAA fans in the area saw the need for a second club in Athlone to cater for the growing population of the town. They won their first Westmeath senior football championship in 2001, and their first Leinster club football title in 2011 after a last-minute free from second-half substitute Conor Cosgrove. They are the first and only Westmeath club to win the title. In 2004, Dessie Dolan was the first player from the club to be awarded an All Star. Dessie received an award for Westmeath footballer of the year for 2015 after his Man of the Match performance against Meath in the Leinster Championship. Ballinagore GAA
Ballinagore GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in County Westmeath, Ireland. The club is affiliated to the Westmeath county board. History Ballinagore GAA was formed in the early 1920s, having previously formed part of the Castletown Geoghegan club. They won the Westmeath Junior Football Championship in 1940, defeating Mental Hospital by 1-7 to 0-3 in the final, which was played in Cusack Park. It was a successful year for Ballinagore, as they also won the Junior League, beating The Downs in the final. In 1986, the club won the county Junior B Championship Final beating Delvin 0-11 to 1-4. Maryland GAA
Maryland GAA is a Gaelic football club based in Drumraney, County Westmeath, Ireland. It was founded in 1957. Maryland play in the Westmeath Intermediate Football Championship and have been winners on 2 occasions, 1980 and 2008. Jack Cooney (born 1971) is a Gaelic football Manager (Gaelic games), manager and former player for the Westmeath county football team, Westmeath county team. He was manager of the Westmeath county team between 2018 and 2022.
