Athlone GAA is the Gaelic football club in the town of Athlone in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. The local hurling club is calleSouthern Gaels Athlone is Westmeath GAA's most successful football club. Club history The club was founded in 1885 by Irish National League members, bringing GAA to Athlone. Athlone GAA are Westmeath's most successful club with 20 senior titles, the last of which was 1998. They achieved an unprecedented six-in-a-row between 1955 and 1960. 2018 represents their 7th time to qualify for Feile Peil na nOg, winning Div 2. The club is home to Westmeath's first footballing All-Star, Rory O'Connell. In 2017, the club bridged a 24-year gap by winning the County Minor Championship. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. Rory O'Connell
Rory O'Connell is a former Gaelic footballer from Athlone, County Westmeath. He was Westmeath's first Football All Stars winner in 2001. He was also part of the Westmeath team that won the county's first Leinster Senior Football Championship in 2004. He played his club football for Athlone. The ''Sunday Tribune'' was an Irish Sunday broadsheet newspaper published by Tribune Newspapers plc. It was edited in its final years by Nóirín Hegarty, who changed both the tone and the physical format of the newspaper from broadsheet to tabloid. Westmeath Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition organised by Westmeath GAA between Gaelic football clubs in County Westmeath. The winner of the competition qualifies to represent the county in the Leinster Intermediate Club Football Championship, the winner of which progresses to the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Football Championship. The top club is promoted to the Westmeath Senior Football Championship, while the bottom club is relegated to the Westmeath Junior Football Championship. The Westmeath Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition organised by Westmeath GAA between the top Gaelic football clubs in County Westmeath. Liam McHale
Liam McHale (born 1 June 1965) is a Gaelic football coach and former player (and basketball player) who played in midfield with the Mayo county football team between 1985 and 1999. He played from the start in four finals of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (including one replay), but was never successful in winning the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. Football career McHale started the 1989 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final, which was won narrowly by Cork. McHale started the 1996 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final. It ended in a draw and a replay followed. Meath defeated Mayo, avenging their defeat to the same opposition in the 1951 decider. McHale was sent off, along with Meath's Colm Coyle. Athlone (; ) is a town on the border of County Roscommon and County Westmeath, Ireland. It is located on the River Shannon near the southern shore of Lough Ree.
