Tyrrellspass GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the town of Tyrrellspass in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. History The team was founded in 1961 and participates in both men's and women's leagues. The team won the Westmeath Senior Football Championship in 1999, 2006 and defended their title in 2007. In the 2007 Leinster Club Football Championship they progressed as far as the final, where they were beaten by the eventual All Ireland Club champions St Vincents GAA, St. Vincents of Dublin. In 2016 & 2017, Tyrrellspass lost the county final to St. Loman's Mullingar GAA, St. Loman's. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Tyrrellspass
Tyrrellspass (, IPA: bʲaləxˈanˠˈtʲɪɾʲiəliː is a Georgian village in County Westmeath, Ireland. It is from Dublin, in the south of the county on the R446 (formerly the N6) road. Tyrrellspass won the Irish Tidy Towns Competition in 1969. As of the census in April 2016, the population of Tyrrellspass was 483. History The origins of the village settlement lie in the Nine Years' War ( 1594- 1603), also called Tyrone's Rebellion. In 1597 there was a battle in Tyrrellspass and the Irish, between 300 and 400 strong and led by Richard Tyrrell, attacked and defeated the English army. Out of 1,000 English troops only one survived. There is a historic castle on the edge of the town, built by Richard Tyrrell, a chief ally of Aodh Mór Ó Néill in the Nine Years' War. Westmeath Senior Football Championship
The Westmeath Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition organised by Westmeath GAA between the top Gaelic football clubs in County Westmeath. The winner of the Westmeath Championship qualifies to represent the county in the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship, the winner of which progresses to the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. The current champions are St Loman's, winning their 8th title in 2020. St Vincents GAA
St Vincents is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Marino, on the northside of Dublin, Ireland. The club was founded in 1931 in Marino, instrumental in the founding of the club were Rev Dr William Fitzpatrick (St Vincent de Paul Church, Marino) and Bro. Ernest Fitzgerald (Scoil Mhuire CBS, Marino). Although its club grounds were in Raheny for a number of years, it moved to its home back into Marino in 1987. St Vincents merged with Marino Camogie Club in 1997 to form the St Vincents Hurling, Football and Camogie Club. They have won the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship on three occasions, most recently in 2014. Ger Egan
Ger Egan (born 1990/1991) is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Tyrrellspass and at senior level for the Westmeath county team. His uncle Joe Hyland was a goalkeeper for Tyrrellspass, who was part of the team that won the 1999 Westmeath Senior Football Championship. Egan got involved in the senior setup at his club in 2007 when he was 16 years of age and when Pat Flanagan was manager, but he was too young to play at the time. He started playing for the Tyrellspass senior team in 2008. He was a crucial part of the team, scoring 1–5 (1–4 from open play) to defeat Dublin at Parnell Park, that won the 2019 O'Byrne Cup, his county's first time to win that trophy since 1988. Jamie Gonoud
Jamie Gonoud (born 1992/1993) is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Tyrrellspass and at senior level for the Westmeath county team. He plays as a corner-back. He made his first championship appearance with Westmeath in 2013 but really nailed down a place in the Westmeath team when Westmeath reached the final of 2016 Leinster Senior Football Championship. He received a black card against Laois in the 2021 Leinster Senior Football Championship. Kildare defeated Westmeath in the 2022 Leinster Senior Football Championship but Gonoud scored a goal and was named on the team of the week, the only Westmeath player included. Nigel Harte
Nigel Harte is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Tyrrellspass and at senior level for the Westmeath county team. He was a U20 player in the 2018 All-Ireland Under 20 Football Championship. Harte won the 2022 Tailteann Cup. He was put in to the team for playing in the final and was going to be the only change from the semi-final instead of Sam Duncan and then Duncan played.
