Sleep is an American heavy metal band from San Jose, California. Guitarist Matt Pike and bassist and vocalist Al Cisneros have been the only constant members throughout its history, with several changes of drummers throughout their history. Critic Eduardo Rivadavia describes them as "perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band" and notes they exerted a strong influence on metal in the 1990s. The band first gained attention with their second album, ''Sleep's Holy Mountain'' (1992). However, conflict with the band's record company contributed to Sleep's breakup by the end of the decade. Sleep's third album, ''Dopesmoker'', was released after the band's dissolution. The band reformed in 2009 and has played sporadic live dates internationally since. Doom metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker" or "heavier" sound than other heavy metal genres.K. Saint Vitus (band)
Saint Vitus is an American doom metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1979. They are considered to be one of the first doom metal bands, and have been labeled as one of the "big four" of that genre, along with Candlemass, Pentagram and Trouble. Having released nine studio albums to date, Saint Vitus never achieved a popular breakthrough, but have exerted great influence on the development of doom metal, sludge metal, and stoner rock. The original line-up consisted of Dave Chandler (guitar), Mark Adams (bass), Armando Acosta (drums) and Scott Reagers (vocals). They recorded their first two albums before Scott Weinrich replaced Reagers in 1986. The line-up of Chandler, Adams, Acosta and Weinrich is the longest-lasting. Volume One (Sleep Album)
''Volume One'' is the debut album by the American band Sleep. Not long after Sleep's formation, the band went to Razor's Edge studios to start recording. It was the only album recorded with original guitarist Justin Marler, before he would depart from the band in fall 1991 to become an Orthodox monk. ''Volume One'' showcases a darker sound and stronger doom metal influence than Sleep's later work. The image featured on the cover is taken from the Salvador Dalí painting "Soft Self-Portrait with Fried Bacon". "The Suffering", "Anguish" and "Scourge" are all re-recordings from the band's days as Asbestosdeath. Volume One would be released sometime in 1991 on CD, Vinyl and Cassette. "Scourge" would be omitted from the cassette and vinyl versions of the album. The vinyl edition of the album would remain out-of-print for years until it was reissued in 2014. Metacritic is a website that review aggregator, aggregates reviews of films, TV shows, music albums, video games and formerly, books. For each product, the scores from each review are averaged (a weighted arithmetic mean, weighted average). Metacritic was created by Jason Dietz, Marc Doyle, and Julie Doyle Roberts in 1999. The site provides an excerpt from each review and hyperlinks to its source. A color of green, yellow or red summarizes the critics' recommendations. It is regarded as the foremost online review aggregation site for the video game industry. ''The Sciences'' is the fourth studio album by American doom metal band Sleep. The album was released with little warning on April 20, 2018 through Third Man Records. It was the band's first full-length album since '' Dopesmoker'' (2003), on which the song "Sonic Titan" appeared as a live bonus track. Just a month after the release of ''The Sciences'', Sleep released the non-album song "Leagues Beneath" through Adult Swim's 2018 weekly single series. ''Jerusalem'' and ''Dopesmoker'' are two versions of the third album by the American heavy metal band Sleep. The former title was released in 1999 by The Music Cartel and the latter was released by Tee Pee Records in 2003. The music for these albums comprises an extended hour-length piece (either split into multiple shorter tracks or presented as a single track), developed over four years and recorded in 1996 under the auspices of Sleep's label at the time, London Records. When recording had completed, London was unhappy with the finished product and refused to release it, leading to Sleep's disbandment and the album surfacing on bootlegs and unauthorized indie releases in subsequent years. ''Sleep's Holy Mountain'' (also known as ''Holy Mountain'') is the second studio album by the American heavy metal band Sleep. It was released in November 1992 in Europe and March 1993 in the US through Earache Records. Release and reception The recordings that would become ''Sleep's Holy Mountain'' were originally sent to independent label Earache as a demo. The label immediately signed the band and released the recordings exactly as they were received. Stoner Rock
Stoner rock, also known as stoner metal or stoner doom, is a rock music fusion genre that combines elements of doom metal with psychedelic rock and acid rock. The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered foremost by Kyuss and Sleep. Characteristics Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo and features a heavily distorted, groove-laden bass-heavy sound, melodic vocals, and "retro" production.
