Dopesmoker
''Jerusalem'' and ''Dopesmoker'' are two versions of the third studio album by the American stoner doom band Sleep. The former title was released in 1999 by The Music Cartel and the latter was released by Tee Pee Records in 2003. The music for these albums comprises an extended hour-length piece (either split into multiple shorter tracks or presented as a single track), developed over four years and recorded in 1996 under the auspices of Sleep's label at the time, London Records. When recording had completed, London was unhappy with the finished product and refused to release it, leading to Sleep's disbandment and the album surfacing on bootlegs and unauthorized indie releases in subsequent years. All versions of the album received very positive reception from music critics, who described it as a high-water mark in both the stoner metal and doom metal genres. Sleep (band)
Sleep is an American stoner/ doom metal band from San Jose, California. Guitarist Matt Pike and bassist and vocalist Al Cisneros have been the only constant members throughout the band's history. Critic Eduardo Rivadavia describes them as "perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band" and notes they exerted a strong influence on metal in the 1990s. The band released their debut album, '' Volume One'', in 1991, after which original fourth member Justin Marler left. Sleep gained wider attention with their second album, '' Sleep's Holy Mountain'', in 1992. However, conflict with the band's record company contributed to their breakup by the end of the decade. The Sciences (album)
''The Sciences'' is the fourth studio album by American stoner/doom metal band Sleep. The album was released with little warning on April 20, 2018, through Third Man Records. It was the band's first full-length album since '' Dopesmoker'' (2003). Just a month after the release of ''The Sciences'', Sleep released the non-album song " Leagues Beneath" through Adult Swim's 2018 weekly single series. Background and composition In 2009, Sleep re-formed and played a handful of shows. " The Clarity", the band's first new studio material since 2003's '' Dopesmoker'', was released in 2014. In an interview with NPR Music about the release of that single, the band wrote, "Sleep has been sporadically writing riffs for a while now ..There is no preconceived idea of what the new material should be. Al Cisneros
Alberto R. Cisneros (; born September 23, 1973) is an American musician. He is the lead singer and bassist for stoner rock/doom metal bands Sleep (band), Sleep and Om (band), Om. He also was a member of Shrinebuilder and Asbestosdeath (the precursor to Sleep) and has put out nine releases as a solo artist. Career Cisneros' earliest musical interests included an appreciation of Black Sabbath, in particular their first four albums. In 1989 he formed the sludge metal band Asbestosdeath, taking up bass and vocal duties, with Chris Hakius on drums and Matt Pike and Tom Choi on guitar. Asbestosdeath released two EPs in 1990. Sleep Following Choi's departure, Cisneros, Hakius and Pike recruited Justin Marler on guitar and renamed themselves Sleep (band), Sleep. Matt Pike
Matthew Lance Pike (born June 3, 1972) is an American musician best known as the guitarist of stoner metal, stoner/doom metal band Sleep (band), Sleep and the vocalist and guitarist of High on Fire. With High on Fire, Pike won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the song "Electric Messiah". Early life Pike was born in Southfield, Michigan. He moved to California after spending time in military school while living with his mother in Golden, Colorado. Arriving in San Jose, California, San Jose, he realized the hardcore punk and Heavy metal music, heavy metal scenes were more active than the ones in Colorado. He made friends, attended shows, and eventually joined the sludge metal band Asbestosdeath. When playing around the Bay Area they developed a much heavier and slower sound more akin to doom metal. Arik Roper
Arik Moonhawk Roper (born 1973) is an illustrator and painter based in New York City. Roper grew up in Richmond, Virginia. His parents both being artists, his creativity was encouraged and he spent a great deal of time during childhood drawing. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in 1995 specializing in cartooning, illustration, and silk-screening, he began working as a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist for advertising agencies in New York City. In 1998 he was hired as a storyboard revisionist at MTV Animation for the series Downtown. Later he directed his creativity toward more personal interests while shifting into the world of music-related visual art and packaging. Sleep's Holy Mountain
''Sleep's Holy Mountain'' (also known as ''Holy Mountain'') is the second studio album by the American stoner doom band Sleep. It was released in November 1992 in Europe and March 1993 in the US through Earache Records. Release and reception The recordings that would become ''Sleep's Holy Mountain'' were originally sent to independent label Earache as a demo. The label immediately signed the band and released the recordings exactly as they were received. It was the last album to be released by the band as a fully functioning group for a while, as their subsequent albums up to 2018's '' The Sciences'' were released after the group had broken up. A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English) or a vinyl record (for later varieties only) is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove.
