VIVA Awards
The VIVA Awards are $15,000 prizes, granted annually to British Columbian mid-career artists chosen for "outstanding achievement and commitment" by the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation. The awards are presented by the Shadbolt Foundation in conjunction with the Alvin Balkind Curator's Prize and the Max Wyman Award for Critical Writing. Jack Shadbolt
Jack Leonard Shadbolt, (February 4, 1909 November 22, 1998) was a Canadian painter. Early life Born in Shoeburyness, England, Shadbolt came to Canada with his parents in April 1911. He was raised in Victoria, British Columbia. He studied at the Art Students' League in New York City (1948) and in London (1937) and Paris (1938). From 1928 to 1937, he taught in high schools in Duncan, British Columbia and Vancouver, British Columbia. Starting in 1938, he taught and studied with Frederick Varley at the Vancouver School of Art. He married Doris Meisel in 1945 and the couple moved to Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver, in 1950. War artist In 1942, during World War II, Jack Shadbolt enlisted in the army. Beau Dick (November 23, 1955 – March 27, 2017) was a Kwakwaka'wakw Northwest Coast artist and Chief who lived and worked in Alert Bay, British Columbia, Canada. He was a contemporary artist, activist and hereditary Chief from the Namgis First Nation. Althea Thauberger
Althea Thauberger is a Canadian visual artist, film maker and educator. Marina Roy
Marina Roy is a visual artist, educator and writer based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Life Roy was born in Quebec City, and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in her youth. Kathy Slade
Kathy Slade (1966) is a Canadian artist, author, curator, editor, and publisher born in Montreal, Quebec, and based in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is currently a Term Lecturer at Simon Fraser University's School for the Contemporary Arts. Education Slade graduated with a B.A. from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC in 1990, and received an M.A. from the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland in 2018. Isabelle Pauwels
Isabelle Pauwels (born 1975 in Kortrijk, Belgium) is a Vancouver-based artist who works primarily in video-based art. Pauwels received a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and obtained an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. Pauwels' work explores narrative structures, forms of storytelling and how they shape moral and emotional experiences. The narrative in her work does not follow causality; instead it performs in a twisting loop that circles around itself. Luanne Martineau
Luanne Martineau (born 1970) is a contemporary, multimedia Canadian artist best known for her hand-spun and felted wool sculptures. Her work engages with social satire as well as feminist textile practice. Life Martineau was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Marianne Nicolson
Marianne Nicolson (‘Tayagila’ogwa; born 1969) is a Dzawada’enuxw visual artist whose work explores the margins at which public access to First Nations artifacts clashes with the preservation of indigenous cultural knowledge. She utilizes painting, photography, mixed-media, sculpture, and installation to create modern depictions of traditional Kwakwaka’wakw beliefs, and has exhibited in Canada and throughout the world since 1992. Rebecca Belmore
Rebecca Belmore D.F.A. (born 1960) is an interdisciplinary Anishinaabekwe artist who is notable for politically conscious and socially aware performance and installation work.
