Marina Roy
Marina Roy is a visual artist, educator and writer based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Life Roy was born in Quebec City, and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in her youth. She obtained a B.A. in French Literature at Université Laval, a B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and an M.F.A. from the University of British Columbia. She has shown nationally and internationally, including the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Contemporary Art Gallery, Centre A, Malaspina, and Or Gallery. She is an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory. Artistic practice Roy's practice is cross disciplinary, with a focus on drawing, painting and animation. Her work investigates material intelligence in a post-humanist perspective. Abbas Akhavan
Abbas Akhavan is a Montreal-based visual artist. His recent work consists of site-specific installations, sculpture, video, and performance, consistently in response to the environment in which the work is created. Akhavan was born in Tehran, Iran in 1977. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University in 2004 and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia in 2006. Akhavan's family immigrated to Canada from Iran during the Iran-Iraq war. His work has gained international acclaim, exhibiting in museums, galleries and biennales all over North America, Europe and the Middle East. Lyse Lemieux (artist)
Lyse Lemieux is a Canadian contemporary visual artist based in Vancouver. She has exhibited nationally and internationally since 1976. Her art practice focuses primarily on drawing, painting and installation work. Biography Lyse Lemieux was born in 1956 in Ottawa, Canada. She studied at the University of Ottawa (1973–75) and received a BFA from the University of British Columbia (1976-1978). Lemieux was appointed and served for eight years (2002-2010) as a part-time member of the Canadian Artist and Producers Professional Relations Tribunal, a quasi-judicial tribunal in Ottawa, responsible for the interpretation and administration of the Status of the Artist Act (SAA). She also worked on contract as a radio producer and television journalist in Vancouver for La Société Radio-Canada in Vancouver (1987-2013). VIVO Media Arts Centre, run under the Satellite Video Exchange Society, (SVES) is an artist-run centre and video distribution library located in Vancouver, Canada. It was founded in 1973 to promote the non-commercial use of video technology by providing international and educational video exchange through a public video library. Its mission has then been expanded to provide equipment rentals, artist workshops, and provide information to the public about media arts. Art Gallery Of Mississauga
The Art Gallery of Mississauga (AGM) is a public, not-for-profit art gallery in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It is located at the Mississauga Civic Centre right on Celebration Square across from Square One Mall. Platform Gallery is a contemporary art gallery formerly located for 12 years in the Tashiro Kaplan Building in historic Pioneer Square, Seattle, Pioneer Square District in Downtown Seattle. It was founded in 2004 by four artists, including Stephen Lyons, who is now sole owner. In late 2016, the gallery moved from its brick and mortar space to exhibiting and selling artworks exclusively online. Artspeak Gallery
Artspeak is a computer language conceived by Jacob T. Schwartz at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Until 2011, the only known compiler/interpreter was written for the CDC 6600, a mainframe computer. In order to program in Artspeak on the CDC 6600, one had to use punch cards and utilize batch processing. Artspeak was a specialized language that worked with a single-color graphical plotter to produce graphical output on a 10-inch by 10-inch sheet of paper. It used simple, English language-based statements to draw elemental shapes, including circles, points, text, and many types of curves (including lines). In 2011, Ron Schnell (author of Dunnet) found an old draft manual for the language, and after discovering that the language ceased to exist, wrote it from scratch in Python. The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the campus of the University of British Columbia. The gallery is housed in an award-winning building designed by architect Peter Cardew and opened in 1995. It houses UBC's growing collection of contemporary art as well as an archives containing objects and records related to the history of art in Vancouver.
