Urartu Basketball Club ( hy, Ուրարտու բասկետբոլային ակումբ), also currently known as Urartu Vivaro for sponsorship reasons, is a professional basketball team in Armenia, currently based in Yerevan. Founded in 2016 in Yerevan. The team is a founding member of the Armenia Basketball League A. History Urartu was founded in 2016 with the players who participated for national team in the European Championship for Small Countries played just months before. In its debut first season, the club joined the Russian Basketball Super League, but after nine rounds the team resigned to continue playing due to financial difficulties. The Armenia Basketball League A (Armenian: ), is the top men's official basketball league in Armenia. The first season of the competition was launched in 2017. Since 2019, it has been renamed the VBET A-League after a headline sponsorship agreement with the Armenian gambling operator VBET. History After the creation of the Armenia national basketball team, the Basketball Federation of Armenia decided to establish the new League A for training new players for the national team. The Federation also aims to develop national basketball in Armenia by negotiating with other clubs, trying to sign Armenian players which seek to play abroad, and enabling teams to qualify for various European competitions in further seasons. Armenia National Basketball Team
The Armenian national basketball team (, ''Hayastani basketboli azgayin havak'akan'') is the national basketball team representing Armenia. The national team is directed by the Basketball Federation of Armenia. Since 2006, the President of the federation is Hrachya Rostomyan. History In December 2015, it was announced that the men's national team would play in its first official tournament ever in Summer 2016, after joining the 2016 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries. The team won the tournament by beating Moldova national basketball team in the gold medal game 79–71. Armenia's debut in major competition was in the 2019 World Cup qualification, where despite achieving three wins in six matches, it was eliminated in the first round. 2016 FIBA European Championship For Small Countries
The 2016 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries was the 15th edition of this tournament. It was hosted by Moldova. The 2017–18 Armenia Basketball League A season, was the inaugural season of the new official competition of basketball first division in Armenia. Artsakh won the title after doing a perfect 6–0 in the playoffs. Competition format After several negotiations, finally seven teams joined the competition, consisting in a round-robin tournament where the best teams would qualify for the playoffs. The best teams are able for qualifying to the European competitions. The regular season consisted in a double-legged round-robin tournament where the first qualified would join directly the semifinals. The other six teams would face in the quarterfinals. The 2018–19 Armenia Basketball League A is the second season of the basketball first division of Armenia. Artsakh are the defending champions. Competition format The regular season consists in a double-legged round-robin tournament where the six teams qualify for the playoffs. Teams Six teams will take part in the competition after the withdrawal of 3 teams -Engineer, Shirak and Grand Sport-, and the admission of 2 teams - Aragats and Erebuni-.
