StorySLAM
The StorySLAM is a live storytelling competition in the vein of poetry slams organized by The Moth, a non-profit literary society from New York City, since 2001. Storytellers (slammers) have 5 minutes each to tell a story, based on a theme chosen for the event. No notes are allowed: stories must be told and not read. The events, held in cities around the United States, now also include a competition; participants are judged by teams of audience members. The organization also holds a biannual Grand Slam competition. Notables performing at StorySLAMs include Moby, Lily Taylor, and Frank McCourt. The Moth
The Moth is a non-profit group based in New York City dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. Founded in 1997, the organization presents a wide range of theme-based storytelling events across the United States and abroad, often featuring prominent literary and cultural personalities alongside everyday people like veterans, astronauts, school teachers, and parents. The Moth offers a weekly podcast and in 2009 launched a national public radio show, ''The Moth Radio Hour'', which won a 2010 Peabody Award. The Moth has published four books including ''The Moth: 50 True Stories'' (2013) reached #22 on ''The New York Times'' Paperback Nonfiction Best-Seller List; ''All These Wonders: True Stories about Facing the Unknown'' (2017); and ''Occasional Magic: True Stories About Defying the Impossible'' (2019) and ''How to Tell a Story: The Essential Guide to Memorable Storytelling from The Moth (2022). Poetry Slam
A poetry slam is a competitive art event in which poets perform spoken word poetry before a live audience and a panel of judges. While formats can vary, slams are often loud and lively, with audience participation, cheering and dramatic delivery. Hip-hop music and urban culture are strong influences, and backgrounds of participants tend to be diverse. Poetry slams began in Chicago in 1984, with the first slam competition designed to move poetry recitals from academia to a popular audience. American poet Marc Smith, believing the poetry scene at the time was "too structured and stuffy", began experimenting by attending open-microphone poetry readings, and then turning them into slams by introducing the element of competition. The performances at a poetry slam are judged as much on enthusiasm and style as content, and poets may compete as individuals or in teams.
