Spirit-class Cruise Ship
The ''Spirit'' class is a class of cruise ships built at the Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki New Shipyard in Helsinki, Finland. The ships are operated by Carnival Cruise Lines, CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping and Costa Cruises (a subsidiary of Miami-based Carnival Corporation). The six ships were built to the original Panamax form factor, allowing them to pass through the Panama Canal. This class has the smallest of the signature smoke stacks that Carnival has on their ships. Carnival's ''Spirit''-class ships also feature a unique funnel design that integrates the skylight dome of the atrium. In 2007 and 2009, and (built by Fincantieri) were introduced. The design of these ships are a hybrid between the ''Spirit'' class and the , creating the Vista/''Spirit'' hybrid class. As of November 2022, ''Costa Luminosa'' (now ''Carnival Luminosa'') is marketed by Carnival as a part of their ''Spirit'' class. Kvaerner Masa-Yards
STX Finland Oy, formerly Aker Yards Oy, was a Finnish shipbuilding company operating three shipyards in Finland, in Turku, Helsinki and Rauma, Finland, Rauma, employing some 2,500 people. It was part of STX Europe, a group of international shipbuilding companies owned by the South Korean STX Corporation. Half of Hietalahti shipyard, Helsinki yard was sold to Russian United Shipbuilding Corporation, USC in 2010. In September 2013, STX Finland announced that the Rauma shipyard would be closed in June 2014. In August 2014, the Perno shipyard, Turku shipyard was sold to Meyer Werft the state-owned Finnish Industry Investment and renamed Meyer Turku, Meyer Turku Oy. A funnel is the smokestack or chimney on a ship used to expel boiler steam and smoke or engine exhaust. They are also commonly referred to as stacks. Purpose The primary purpose of a ship's funnel(s) is to lift the exhaust gases clear of the deck, in order not to foul the ship's structure or decks, and to avoid impairing the ability of the crew to carry out their duties. In steam ships the funnels also served to help induce a convection draught through the boilers. Design Since the introduction of steam-power to ships in the 19th century, the funnel has been a distinctive feature of the silhouette of a vessel, and used for recognition purposes.
