''Rosa'' 'Madame Caroline Testout' is a bright pink hybrid tea rose, bred by French rosarian, Joseph Pernet-Ducher. The pink, fragrant rose has been a very popular rose worldwide since its introduction in 1890. It is recognized by the city of Portland as being an important contributor to its worldwide reputation as the "City of Roses" Description 'Madame Caroline Testout' is a hybrid tea rose, 3 to 4 ft (91–121 cm) in height, with a 2 to 3 ft (60–90 cm) spread. The flowers are large and globular in form with many short, wide petals (26-40) that curl back at the edges. 'Mme. Caroline Testout' has a strong, sweet fragrance. ''Rosa foetida'', known by several common names, including Austrian briar, Persian yellow rose, and Austrian copper rose, is a species of rose, native to the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia. It has yellow flowers with a scent which some find objectionable. Joseph Pernet-Ducher
Joseph Pernet-Ducher (1859–1928) was a French rose breeder who is recognized for his work in the development of the modern Hybrid tea rose. Pernet and his father, Jean Pernet, worked together in the 1880s to develop the first yellow Remontancy, remontant Garden rose#Hybrid perpetual, Hybrid perpetual rose. After Jean Pernet's death in 1896, Pernet-Ducher continued their work and later introduced Rosa 'Soleil d'Or', 'Soleil d'Or' in 1900. 'Soleil d'Or' initiated a new class of tea roses known as Pernetiana roses and is considered the ancestor of the modern Hybrid tea rose.
