Princeton Club (Philadelphia)
The Princeton Club is a pair of historic buildings located at 1221 and 1223 Locust Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. History and architectural features The building at 1223 was designed by architect Frank Furness; the building at 1221 is believed to have been partly designed by architect Lindley Johnson. From 1910 through the 1970s, the buildings housed the Princeton Club of Philadelphia. Alterations were made by the club in 1915 and 1919 to join the buildings together. The Princeton Club of Philadelphia was founded in 1868, and was housed in five other buildings before moving to Locust Street. Frank Furness
Frank Heyling Furness (November 12, 1839 - June 27, 1912) was an American architect of the Victorian era. He designed more than 600 buildings, most in the Philadelphia area, and is remembered for his diverse, muscular, often unordinarily scaled buildings, and for his influence on the Chicago architect Louis Sullivan. Furness also received a Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War. Toward the end of his life, his bold style fell out of fashion, and many of his significant works were demolished in the 20th century. Among his most important surviving buildings are the University of Pennsylvania Library (now the Fisher Fine Arts Library), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia, all in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Baldwin School Residence Hall in Bryn Mawr. Lindley Johnson
Lindley Johnson (January 18, 1854February 27, 1937) was a noted Philadelphia architect. Johnson was born in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended Germantown Academy before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1875. He went on to be trained at École des Beaux-Arts for three years. Johnson spent one year in the office of Frank Furness, another noted Philadelphia architect before starting his own firm.
