Oncomelania Hupensis
''Oncomelania hupensis'' is a species of very small tropical freshwater snail, an aquatic gastropod mollusk in the family Pomatiopsidae. Distribution ''Oncomelania hupensis'' has been found in China, Taiwan, and also in Japan, the Philippines, and on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Description Over the past a few decades, the taxonomy of ''Oncomelania hupensis'' has been a dispute due to the variation in morphological characters such as shell sculpture, operculum etc. Phenotypically, ''Oncomelania hupensis'' can be separated into ribbed- and smooth- shelled morphotypes. In China, the typical morphotype of ''Oncomelania hupensis'' is ribbed-shelled, and its distribution is restricted to Yangtze River basin. Vinzenz Maria Gredler
Vinzenz Maria Gredler (30 September 1823, in Telfs near Innsbruck – 4 May 1912, in Bozen) was an Austrian naturalist. Gredler, who was a Dominican friar, first studied classics (1835–1841) then philosophy and theology (1842–1848). He then studied natural sciences at the Gymnasium in Halle (1848–1849). Without other qualifications, he succeeded in gaining a natural history diploma. He then served as director of the Franciscan Gymnasium in Bozen from 1849 to 1901. Sculpture is a feature of many of the shells of mollusks. It is three-dimensional ornamentation on the outer surface of the shell, as distinct from either the basic shape of the shell itself or the pattern of colouration, if any. Sculpture is a feature found in the shells of gastropods, bivalves, and scaphopods. The word "sculpture" is also applied to surface features of the aptychus of ammonites, and to the outer surface of some calcareous opercula of marine gastropods such as some species in the family Trochidae.
