The Order of the Most Holy AnnunciationIn Italian: ''Ordine della Santissima Annunziata'' ( la, Ordo Sanctissimae Annuntiationis), also known as the Turchine or Blue Nuns, as well as the Celestine Nuns, is a Roman Catholic religious order of contemplative nuns formed in honour of the mystery of the Incarnation of Christ at Genoa, in Italy, by Blessed Maria Vittoria De Fornari Strata. Pope Clement VIII approved the religious order on 5 August 1604, placing it under the Rule of Saint Augustine. The religious order currently has monasteries in Portugal (Fatima), in Italy (Rome), and in the Philippines. Maria Vittoria De Fornari Strata
Maria Vittoria De Fornari Strata (1562 – 15 December 1617) was an Italian Roman Catholic nun and the foundress of the Order of the Annunciation – or Blue Nuns. Fornari was married for just under a decade and decided not to find another spouse after having a vision of the Madonna who instructed her to lead a chaste life of motherhood. The widow decided to found an order not long after this based on the Carmelite charism. Her beatification was held on 21 September 1828. Life Maria Vittoria De Fornari was born in 1562 in Genoa into a noble family, as the seventh of nine children to Girolamo Fornari and Barbara Veneroso. Although she was attracted to religious life, she submitted to her father's wishes and at the age of seventeen, on 21 March 1579 married Angelo Strata. It was a happy marriage. the couple had six children: Angela, Barbara, Giuseppe, Leonardo, Alessandro, and Angelo (1587–97). Pope Clement VIII ( la, Clemens VIII; it, Clemente VIII; 24 February 1536 – 3 March 1605), born Ippolito Aldobrandini, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 2 February 1592 to his death in March 1605. Fátima () is a city in the municipality of Ourém and district of Santarém in the Central Region of Portugal, with 71.29 km2 of area and 13,212 inhabitants (2021). The homonymous civil parish encompasses several villages and localities of which the city of Fátima is the largest.
