''Star Academy'' is a Dutch-developed reality television talent show format that first aired in the Netherlands as ''Star Maker''. Format There are many versions of the show, each country having its own slight variations, but the basic concept remains the same: contestants live in a boarding-school called "The Academy", managed by a director, and various teachers coach them in several artistic disciplines. The participants are filmed with cameras throughout the day and night (an idea borrowed from another of Endemol's major reality shows '' Big Brother''). Once a week, the contestants have to face a prime time show, where they sing the song they've prepared during the week before, as well as recapping their trials and tribulations at The Academy from the past week. The live show will often feature special guest stars, with whom some of the contestants have the opportunity to sing. Johannes Hendrikus Hubert "John" de Mol Jr. is a Dutch media proprietor. De Mol is one of the men behind production companies Endemol and Talpa. ''Project Fame'' was a pan-African version of the international talent/reality show ''Star Academy''. Held in Johannesburg, South Africa from June to August 2004, the show had 16 African contestants – 9 of them South Africans – groomed for stardom, with the weakest being eliminated on a weekly basis; the top three received record deals and the winner got a lot more prizes. The contestants were eliminated in the following way: the judges placed four contestants on probation, the teachers could saved one, the other contestants could save another and viewers could save a third, thereby eliminating the last contestant. As the show progressed, the number of contestants placed on probation rose to five, resulting in two contestants being eliminated. The last five remaining contestants' fates were determined by viewers' votes.
