Nanhua Dam
Nanhua Dam (), originally named Houjie Dam (), is a dam across the Houku River, a tributary of the Zengwen River in southern Taiwan. Located at Nanhua District, Tainan, the dam was built to provide municipal water to Tainan and Kaohsiung City and is operated by the Taiwan Water Corporation. Construction work started in December 1988, and impoundment of the reservoir began in July 1993. A conduit to supply water from the reservoir to Kaohsiung was completed in October 1993 and the entire project was operational in March 1994. The curved earthfill dam is high and long, impounding a reservoir with a capacity of and an active or useful capacity of . The reservoir naturally receives water from a catchment of , which is not enough to fill it alone. Most of the water is actually diverted through a tunnel from the Qishan River to the east, adding to the drainage area. Nanhua District
Nanhua District () is a rural district of about 8,209 residents in Tainan, Taiwan. It has two reservoirs, the larger one being the Nanhua Reservoir. It is the largest district in the city. History After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, Nanhua was organized as a rural township of Tainan County. On 25 December 2010, when Tainan County merged with Tainan City, Nanhua became a district of Tainan City. Tainan (), officially Tainan City, is a Special municipality (Taiwan), special municipality in southern Taiwan facing the Taiwan Strait on its western coast. Taiwan Water Corporation
The Taiwan Water Corporation (TWC; ) is a state-owned water utility providing water supply to most of Taiwan and offshore islands. The company is headquartered in North District, Taichung. History On 16 December 1972, President Chiang Ching-kuo instructed that a water corporation be set up to develop and unified public water supply system island-wide. On 1 April 1973, the preparatory office for Taiwan Water Corporation was set up by Taiwan Provincial Government. Taiwan Water Corporation was then inaugurated by the provincial government in 1974. Former chairman Hsu Hsiang-kun was arrested on bribery and corruption charges in September 2007, and indicted in August 2014. An embankment dam is a large artificial dam. It is typically created by the placement and compaction of a complex semi-plastic mound of various compositions of soil or rock. It has a semi-pervious waterproof natural covering for its surface and a dense, impervious core. This makes the dam impervious to surface or seepage erosion. Such a dam is composed of fragmented independent material particles. The friction and interaction of particles binds the particles together into a stable mass rather than by the use of a cementing substance. Typhoon Morakot
Typhoon Morakot, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Kiko, was the deadliest typhoon to impact Taiwan in recorded history. The eighth named storm and fourth typhoon of the 2009 Pacific typhoon season, Morakot wrought catastrophic damage in Taiwan, leaving 673 people dead and 26 missing, and causing roughly NT$110 billion (US$3.3 billion) in damages. Zengwun Dam
Zengwen Dam, also spelled Tsengwen Dam, () is a major earthen dam in Dapu Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan on the Zengwen River. It is the third tallest dam in Taiwan, and forms Zengwen Reservoir (曾文水庫), the biggest reservoir in Taiwan by volume. The dam stores water for irrigation of the Chianan Plain, Taiwan's most productive agricultural region, and provides flood control along the Zengwen River which flows through Tainan City. The dam supports a 50 megawatt hydroelectric power station.
