Mani, Evros
Mani ( el, Μάνη) is a village and a community in the municipality of Didymoteicho in the Evros regional unit, Greece. It is situated near the left bank of the river Erythropotamos, 2 km west of Karoti, 4 km northeast of Kyani and 10 km northwest of Didymoteicho town centre. In 2011 its population was 385 for the village and 538 for the community, which includes the villages Evgeniko and Sitaria. Its elevation is 55 m. The current town of Mani was founded by Maniot Greeks who fought under the King of Greece against the Republic of Turkey and Kemal Atatürk during the 1920s. Didymoteicho
Didymoteicho ( el, Διδυμότειχο, Didymóteicho ) is a city located on the eastern edge of the Evros regional unit of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in northeastern Greece. It is the seat of the municipality of the same name. The town (pop. 9,263 in 2011) sits on a plain and located south east of Svilengrad, south of Edirne, Turkey and Orestiada, west of Uzunköprü, Turkey, about 20 km north of Soufli and about 90 km north of Alexandroupoli. The municipality of Didymóteicho has a land area of 565.4 km² and a population of 19,493 inhabitants. Name "Didymoteicho" is the modern Greek form of , ''Didymóteichon'', from , ''dídymos'', "twin" and , ''teîchos'', "wall". The name first appears in 591/592, and most resulted from the refortification of the city under Justinian I (see below). Evros ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Έβρου) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. Its name is derived from the river Evros, which appears to have been a Thracian hydronym. Evros is the northernmost regional unit. It borders Turkey to the east, across the river Evros, and it borders Bulgaria to the north and the northwest. Its capital is Alexandroupolis. Together with the regional units Rhodope and Xanthi, it forms the geographical region of Western Thrace. The population density was 34.77 per km2 (2011). The Erythropotamos ( el, Ερυθροπόταμος, meaning "red river") or Luda reka ( bg, Луда река, meaning "mad river") is a river in southern Bulgaria (Haskovo Province) and northeastern Greece ( Evros regional unit). Its Turkish name was ''Kızıldelisu''. Its source is near Mega Dereio. It flows into the Maritsa (Evros) near Didymoteicho. The source of the river is in the eastern Rhodope Mountains in the western Evros regional unit, Greece, near the village Mikro Dereio. It crosses the border with Bulgaria near Gorno Lukovo in the Ivaylovgrad municipality, and forms the Greek-Bulgarian border for several kilometers. Kyani
Kyani ( el, Κυανή meaning "blue") is a settlement in the municipality of Didymoteicho in the northern Evros (regional unit), Evros regional unit, Greece. It is situated between farmlands in the plains on the right bank of the river Erythropotamos, at 40 m elevation. In 2011 its population was 474. It is 3 km northeast of Asvestades, 4 km southwest of Mani, Evros, Mani, and 10 km northwest of Didymoteicho. Population History During the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman period Kyani was known under the name ''Çavuşlu''. At the beginning of the 20th century, a Greek school with 25 students was under operation in the village. Kyani became part of Greece after the end of World War I. Evgeniko
Evgeniko ( el, Ευγενικό, before 1954: Δελήτιον – ''Delitio'') is a village in the northeastern part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. It is located at the foot of low hills by the side of the river Erythropotamos. Evgeniko is part of the community of Mani within the municipality of Didymoteicho. It is 3.5 km south of Sitochori, 5 km northwest of Mani, 16 km northwest of Didymoteicho and 17 km southwest of Orestiada. Its population was recorded as 85 in the 2011 census. Population History Originally, the village was located 2 km north, at the Palaiochoria ("old village") site. Its Ottoman name was Delimosluk (Ντελίμοσλουκ) which was eventually corrupted to Delimis (''Ντελίμις''). The new village was founded in 1922 and renamed to Delitio (Δελήτιο). Maniot
The Maniots or Maniates ( el, Μανιάτες) are the inhabitants of Mani Peninsula, located in western Laconia and eastern Messenia, in the southern Peloponnese, Greece. They were also formerly known as Mainotes and the peninsula as ''Maina''. The Maniots claim to be the descendants of the ancient Spartans and they have often been described as such. The terrain is mountainous and inaccessible (until recently many Mani villages could be accessed only by sea), and the regional name "Mani" is thought to have meant originally "dry" or "barren". The name "Maniot" is a derivative meaning "of Mani". In the early modern period, Maniots had a reputation as fierce and proudly independent warriors, who practiced piracy and fierce blood feuds.
