Evgeniko
Evgeniko ( el, Ευγενικό, before 1954: Δελήτιον – ''Delitio'') is a village in the northeastern part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. It is located at the foot of low hills by the side of the river Erythropotamos. Evgeniko is part of the community of Mani within the municipality of Didymoteicho. It is 3.5 km south of Sitochori, 5 km northwest of Mani, 16 km northwest of Didymoteicho and 17 km southwest of Orestiada. Its population was recorded as 85 in the 2011 census. Population History Originally, the village was located 2 km north, at the Palaiochoria ("old village") site. Its Ottoman name was Delimosluk (Ντελίμοσλουκ) which was eventually corrupted to Delimis (''Ντελίμις''). The new village was founded in 1922 and renamed to Delitio (Δελήτιο). Due to the benefaction of the shipping magnate Eugenios Eugenidis, who provided for the village's water supply, it was later given its current name. See also * ... Didymoteicho
Didymoteicho ( el, Διδυμότειχο, Didymóteicho ) is a city located on the eastern edge of the Evros regional unit of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in northeastern Greece. It is the seat of the municipality of the same name. The town (pop. 9,263 in 2011) sits on a plain and located south east of Svilengrad, south of Edirne, Turkey and Orestiada, west of Uzunköprü, Turkey, about 20 km north of Soufli and about 90 km north of Alexandroupoli. The municipality of Didymóteicho has a land area of 565.4 km² and a population of 19,493 inhabitants. Name "Didymoteicho" is the modern Greek form of , ''Didymóteichon'', from , ''dídymos'', "twin" and , ''teîchos'', "wall". The name first appears in 591/592, and most resulted from the refortification of the city under Justinian I (see below). Mani, Evros
Mani ( el, Μάνη) is a village and a community in the municipality of Didymoteicho in the Evros regional unit, Greece. It is situated near the left bank of the river Erythropotamos, 2 km west of Karoti, 4 km northeast of Kyani and 10 km northwest of Didymoteicho town centre. In 2011 its population was 385 for the village and 538 for the community, which includes the villages Evgeniko and Sitaria. Its elevation is 55 m. The current town of Mani was founded by Maniot Greeks who fought under the King of Greece against the Republic of Turkey and Kemal Atatürk during the 1920s. Eugenios Eugenidis ( el, Ευγένιος Ευγενίδης; December 1882 – April 1954) was a prominent Greek shipping magnate. Early life Eugenios Eugenidis was born in Didymoteicho, Evros (then part of the Ottoman Empire) on 22 December 1882, the son of Agapios Eugenidis, a senior judge in the Ottoman Empire, and of Charikleia Afentaki. He studied at the prestigious Robert College, the most selective independent private high school in Constantinople, which he graduated at the age of twenty. By that time Eugenidis had already envisioned the possibility of going to Greece and building large shipyards, on a par with the best in the world. Evros ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Έβρου) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. Its name is derived from the river Evros, which appears to have been a Thracian hydronym. Evros is the northernmost regional unit. Erythropotamos
The Erythropotamos ( el, Ερυθροπόταμος, meaning "red river") or Luda reka ( bg, Луда река, meaning "mad river") is a river in southern Bulgaria (Haskovo Province) and northeastern Greece ( Evros regional unit). Its Turkish name was ''Kızıldelisu''. Its source is near Mega Dereio. It flows into the Maritsa (Evros) near Didymoteicho. The source of the river is in the eastern Rhodope Mountains in the western Evros regional unit, Greece, near the village Mikro Dereio. Sitochori, Evros
Sitochori () is a village in the northern part of the Evros regional unit, Greece. It is part of the municipality of Didymoteicho. In 2011 its population was 326. Sitochori is about 20 km northwest of central Didymoteicho, and north of the river Erythropotamos. Population History Before 1913 Sitochori was under Ottoman Turkish control. The name of the village under Turkish control was Казълджикьой. There were 150 Bulgarian (Hane) houses in the village. After a brief period of Bulgarian rule between 1913 and 1919, it became part of Greece. The village changed its name to Skourtochori (Σκουρτοχώρι) in 1923 and then it was renamed to its current name, Sitochori, in 1954. Orestiada
Orestiada ( el, Ορεστιάδα, formerly , ''Nea Orestiás''), is the northeasternmost, northernmost and newest city of Greece and the second largest town of the Evros regional unit of Thrace. Founded by Greek refugees from Edirne after the Treaty of Lausanne when the population exchange occurred between Turkey and Greece, in which the river Evros became the new border between the two countries.
