Evros (regional Unit)
Evros ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Έβρου) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. Its name is derived from the river Evros, which appears to have been a Thracian hydronym. Evros is the northernmost regional unit. It borders Turkey to the east, across the river Evros, and it borders Bulgaria to the north and the northwest. Its capital is Alexandroupolis. Together with the regional units Rhodope and Xanthi, it forms the geographical region of Western Thrace. The population density was 34.77 per km2 (2011). Geography Evros is one of the largest regional units of Greece. It forms the eastern part of the geographical region Western Thrace, and includes the island Samothrace in the northern Aegean Sea. Dikaia
Dikaia ( el, Δίκαια, ) is a village in the northern part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. Dikaia was the seat of the former municipality of Trigono, and is part of the municipality Orestiada since 2011. In 2011 its population was 561 for the village and 834 for the community, which includes the villages Dilofos, Krios and Palli. It is located on the right bank of the river Evros, where it forms the border with Bulgaria. It is about 15 km southeast of Svilengrad, Bulgaria, and 25 km west of Edirne, Turkey. Transport Road Dikaia is bypassed by the Greek National Road 51/E85 (Alexandroupoli - Soufli - Orestiada - Ormenio - Svilengrad). Rail The settlement is served by railway station on the Alexandroupoli–Svilengrad line with services to Alexandroupoli, Ormenio and Didymoteicho. Population The town is populated by Arvanites. Kastanies
Kastanies ( el, Καστανιές, meaning "chestnuts", tr, Kestanelik which means "chestnut" too) is a town located in northern part of the regional unit of Evros, Greece, and is part of the municipal unit of Vyssa. It is situated at the border with Turkey. Geography Kastanies is situated in the low plains near the confluence of the rivers Evros and Ardas, on the south bank of the Ardas. The area consists of farmlands, with some forests at the banks of the rivers. There are two road bridges and one railway bridge across the Ardas. Kastanies is 2.5 km south of Marasia, 4 km west of Karaağaç (Turkey), 5 km northeast of Rizia, 8 km northwest of Nea Vyssa, 8 km southwest of Edirne (Turkey) and 16 km north of Orestiada. Karoti ( el, Καρωτή) is a village in the municipality of Didymoteicho in the northern part of the Evros regional unit, Greece. Its population was 271 in 2011. Fylakio
Fylakio (Greek: Φυλάκιο) is a village in the Evros regional unit of northeast Greece. Fylakio is in the municipal unit of Kyprinos. In 2011 the population of Fylakio was 595 for the village and 971 for the community, including the villages Ammovouno and Keramos. It is located on the right bank of the river Ardas, about halfway between Ivaylovgrad (Bulgaria) and Edirne (Turkey). Population History Towards the end of Ottoman rule, Fylakio's inhabitants were 3/4 Bulgarian and 1/4 Turkish. After a brief period of Bulgarian rule between 1913 and 1919, it became part of Greece. Greek refugees from Asia Minor arrived in the village following the end of the war. Feres, Evros
Feres ( el, Φέρες) is a town and a former municipality in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Alexandroupoli, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 411.160 km2. Population 8,551 (2011). Feres is linked with the GR-2 or the Egnatia Odos (Alexandroupoli - Kavala - Thessaloniki - Kozani - Igoumenitsa) and the GR-51 (Alexandroupoli - Orestiada - Ormenio. The Evros river along with Turkey is to the east and also includes the entire delta to the south. History Feres grew out of the Theotokos Kosmosoteira monastery, erected in 1152 by the ''sebastokrator'' Isaac Komnenos, a son of the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos as his residence and final resting place. Ellinochori (Greek: Ελληνοχώρι meaning Greek village; formerly Βουλγάρκιοϊ, bg, Булгаркьой or Балъ Булгаркьой, tr, Bulgarkoj or Balı-Bulgarköy, ''Bulgarian village'') is a village in the northeastern part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. Ellinochori is part of the municipality of Didymoteicho. It is situated on the left bank of the river Erythropotamos, northwest of the centre of Didymoteicho. In 2011 its population was 593 for the village and 1,373 for the community, including the villages Lagos and Thyrea. Elaia ( el, Ελαία meaning olives, Bulgarian: Делиелес - ''Delieles'') is a village in the northern part of the Evros regional unit, Greece. Elaia is in the municipal unit of Trigono.
