Cardiff
Cardiff (; cy, Caerdydd ) is the capital and largest city of Wales. It forms a principal area, officially known as the City and County of Cardiff ( cy, Dinas a Sir Caerdydd, links=no), and the city is the eleventh-largest in the United Kingdom. Located in the south-east of Wales and in the Cardiff Capital Region, Cardiff is the county town of the historic county of Glamorgan and in 1974–1996 of South Glamorgan. Llanishen
Llanishen (Welsh Llanisien ''llan'' church + ''Isien'' Saint Isan) is a district and community in the north of Cardiff, Wales. Its population as of the 2011 census was 17,417. Llanishen is the home of the former HMRC tax offices, the tallest buildings in north Cardiff and a landmark for miles around. The office complex overlooks the Crystal and Fishguard estates, the Parc Tŷ Glas industrial estate, Llanishen village, leafy suburban roads and parks that constitute the district. Llanishen is also home to a leisure centre and the former Llanishen Reservoir, which is connected to a green corridor which bisects the city. Rumney, Cardiff
Rumney ( cy, Tredelerch) is a district and community in the east of the city of Cardiff, Wales. It lies east of the Rhymney River, and is historically part of Monmouthshire. On 1 April 1938 the Cardiff Extension Act 1937 incorporated it into the county borough of Cardiff, although it remained part of Monmouthshire, and England until the Local Government Act 1972 made Monmouthshire a part of Wales. Description This is a predominantly residential area with a variety of social and private housing. Riverside, Cardiff
Riverside ( cy, Glan yr Afon) is an inner-city area and community of Cardiff, Wales, next to the River Taff. Riverside is also the name of the electoral ward, which includes the district of Pontcanna, to the north. The population of the community in 2011 was 13,771. Pontcanna was removed from the community in 2016. Description Riverside consists mainly of terraced houses and until 2016 the community included the grand houses of Pontcanna and lining Cathedral Road. The area has a diverse population including Bangladeshi, Sikh and Chinese heritage, particularly to the south of Cowbridge Road and around Tudor Street. Rhiwbina
Rhiwbina ( cy, Rhiwbeina, also ''Rhiwbina'') is a suburb and Community (Wales), community in the north of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Formerly a small hamlet within the parish of Whitchurch, Cardiff, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina was developed throughout the twentieth century, and is now a separate ward. It retains aspects of its former character, however, and is given a Welsh village appearance by Beulah United Reformed Church (originally Capel Beulah) at the village crossroads. Modern Rhiwbina, which includes Rhiwbina Garden Village, Wenallt Hill, Rhiwbina Hill, Rhydwaedlyd and the Llanishen Fach and Pantmawr developments, is bordered by the suburbs of Whitchurch, Cardiff, Whitchurch (Yr Eglwys Newydd) to the west, Llanishen to the east, and Birchgrove, Cardiff, Birchgrove (Llwynbedw) to the south. Radyr & Morganstown
Radyr and Morganstown is a community (civil parish) of Cardiff which covers the areas of Radyr and Morganstown in the northwest of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. The community elects a Radyr and Morganstown community council. Description The Radyr and Morganstown community is crossed to the north by the M4 motorway, which separates Morganstown from Radyr. The eastern border of the community and ward is defined by the River Taff. The rural communities of Pentyrch and St Fagans lie to the northwest and southwest. It is one of the most affluent areas of Cardiff, with Radyr being more so than Morganstown. The boundary of the Radyr and Morganstown community matches that of the electoral ward. Pontprennau & Old St
Pontprennau is a ward and community in the north of the city of Cardiff, Wales, lying north of Pentwyn and Cyncoed, between the village of Old St Mellons and the farmlands east of Lisvane. The community had a population of 7,353 in 2011. History Pontprennau is the Welsh for "Bridge of Trees". Lying east-west along the foot of the hills of the South Wales valleys, with Caerphilly directly north, the area is defined by a series of hills, intersected by shallow valleys created by streams which feed as tributaries into the Rhymney River. Plasnewydd
Plasnewydd (meaning ''New Manor'' or ''New Place'' in English) is an electoral ward (and formerly the name of a community) of Cardiff, Wales. It falls within the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff Central. It is bounded by the electoral wards of Cyncoed (Roath Park) to the north; Penylan to the northeast; Adamsdown (main Newport Road) to the southwest; and Cathays (Cardiff to Caerphilly railway) to the west. It covers what is now the community of Roath. The ward population taken at the 2011 census was 18,166. History Plasnewydd takes its name from a 17th century house called "The New Place", originally a home of Edwards Richard and, in 1890, given to the local people. It later became the Mackintosh Community Centre. Roath and Plasnewydd were absorbed into Cardiff in 1875. Penylan
Penylan is a district and Community (Wales), community in the east of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, known for its Edwardian era period houses and spacious tree lined roads and avenue (landscape), avenues. Situated to both the north and south of the A48 road, A48 dual carriageway, it is one of the most affluent districts of Cardiff, although subdivision of the large Victorian period properties is starting to occur in the areas at the south end of the ward, mimicking the trend in neighbouring Plasnewydd. Penylan has a number of large parks, including the southern part of Roath Park, and is one of the greenest areas in Cardiff. It is served by Penylan Library. Penylan Synagogue was opened in 1955, and closed in 2003 when a new synagogue had been built in nearby Cyncoed Gardens. Pentyrch
Pentyrch ( cy, Pen-tyrch) is a village and community located on the western outskirts of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. The village gives its name to a Cardiff local authority electoral ward, Pentyrch, which covers the village and immediate surrounding area. The Pentyrch community includes the neighbouring village of Creigiau and Gwaelod y Garth. People living in Pentyrch are commonly known as "Penterchyians". Pentwyn (electoral Ward)
Pentwyn is the name of an electoral ward in the northeast of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. It covers the communities of Pentwyn and Llanedeyrn (which was created from the southern part of Pentwyn in 2016). The ward has elected councillors to the post-1996 Cardiff Council and the pre-1996 Cardiff City Council. Description The Pentwyn ward is bordered to the north by the Pontprennau & Old St Mellons, to the west by Cyncoed and to the south by the Penylan ward. To the east the border is defined by the River Rhymney. The Pentwyn ward elected three councillors to Cardiff Council in 1995 and has elected four councillors since 1999. It has been represented by the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats, with the Liberal Democrats dominating the ward since 2004. Llanrumney
Llanrumney ( cy, Llanrhymni) is a suburb, community and electoral ward in east Cardiff, Wales. Llanrumney was in Monmouthshire until it was incorporated into Cardiff in 1938. History The land where modern Llanrumney stands was left to Keynsham Abbey by the Lord of Glamorgan after the Norman Conquest. According to legend, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the final prince of an independent Wales, was interred in a stone coffin by the monks in 1282, on land where Llanrumney Hall would be built centuries later. After Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in the sixteenth century, the land passed to the Kemeys family. It remained in their possession until 1951, when it and its grounds were compulsorily purchased by the local authority in order to build the large estates that can be seen there today.
