Pentwyn (electoral Ward)
Pentwyn is the name of an electoral ward in the northeast of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. It covers the communities of Pentwyn and Llanedeyrn (which was created from the southern part of Pentwyn in 2016). The ward has elected councillors to the post-1996 Cardiff Council and the pre-1996 Cardiff City Council. Description The Pentwyn ward is bordered to the north by the Pontprennau & Old St Mellons, to the west by Cyncoed and to the south by the Penylan ward. To the east the border is defined by the River Rhymney. The Pentwyn ward elected three councillors to Cardiff Council in 1995 and has elected four councillors since 1999. It has been represented by the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats, with the Liberal Democrats dominating the ward since 2004. Electoral Ward
A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. In some countries, wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area (e.g. William Morris Ward in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England). Penylan
Penylan is a district and Community (Wales), community in the east of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, known for its Edwardian era period houses and spacious tree lined roads and avenue (landscape), avenues. Situated to both the north and south of the A48 road, A48 dual carriageway, it is one of the most affluent districts of Cardiff, although subdivision of the large Victorian period properties is starting to occur in the areas at the south end of the ward, mimicking the trend in neighbouring Plasnewydd. Penylan has a number of large parks, including the southern part of Roath Park, and is one of the greenest areas in Cardiff. It is served by Penylan Library. Penylan Synagogue was opened in 1955, and closed in 2003 when a new synagogue had been built in nearby Cyncoed Gardens. 1991 Cardiff City Council Election
The 1991 Cardiff City Council election was held on Thursday 2 May 1991 to the district council of Cardiff in South Glamorgan, Wales. It took place on the same day as other district council elections in Wales and England. The Labour Party regained a majority on Cardiff City Council, after sharing government for the previous four years. The previous Cardiff City Council election took place in 1987. The 1991 election was to be the final election to the district council before its dissolution and replacement, in 1995, by the new County Council of the City and County of Cardiff unitary authority. Russell Goodway
Russell Vivian Goodway (born 23 December 1955) is a Welsh Labour Party councillor for Ely, Cardiff; and the former Lord Mayor of Cardiff and former CEO of Cardiff Chamber of Commerce. He was Britain's youngest council leader when he led South Glamorgan County Council in 1992. Background Goodway was born in St Athan, Glamorgan, at the RAF Hospital. He was brought up in nearby Rhoose. He went to Barry Boys' Comprehensive School before gaining a degree in economics and politics at University College, Swansea. One of his ambitions was to become a Church in Wales vicar, before he entered politics "by mistake" in 1985. Career Goodway became a community councillor in Rhoose at the age of 21. 2017 City Of Cardiff Council Election
The 2017 Cardiff Council Election was held on 4 May 2017 as part of the national 2017 Welsh local elections. The elections were preceded by the 2012 Cardiff Council election, 2012 elections and will be followed by the 2022 Cardiff Council election, 2022 elections. Election result Labour maintained control of the authority following these elections, gaining their highest popular vote since 1995, but ending up with a reduced number of seats. The Conservatives achieved their best result since the unitary council was created in 1995, winning twenty seats and replacing the Liberal Democrats as the official opposition on the council. The Welsh Liberal Democrats ( cy, Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol Cymru) are a branch of the United Kingdom Liberal Democrats that operates in Wales. The party is led by Jane Dodds, who served as MP for Brecon and Radnorshire from August to December 2019, and MS for Mid and West Wales since May 2021. River Rhymney
The Rhymney River ( cy, Afon Rhymni) is a river in the Rhymney Valley, South Wales, flowing through Cardiff into the Severn Estuary. The river formed the boundary between the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire until in 1887, the parishes east of the river, Rumney and St Mellons, were transferred from the jurisdiction of Newport, to Cardiff in Glamorgan. The river flows south from its source near Rhymney through New Tredegar, Bargoed, Ystrad Mynach, Llanbradach to Caerphilly at the southern end of the Rhymney Valley. Then past Bedwas, Trethomas, Machen, Draethen, Llanrumney and Rumney and its estuary into the River Severn. The Rhymney Valley () was created as a glacial valley.
