Welsh Liberal Democrats
The Welsh Liberal Democrats ( cy, Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol Cymru) are a branch of the United Kingdom Liberal Democrats that operates in Wales. The party is led by Jane Dodds, who served as MP for Brecon and Radnorshire from August to December 2019, and MS for Mid and West Wales since May 2021. The party currently has 1 elected member in the Senedd and no Welsh seats in the UK House of Commons, but does have several members of the House of Lords. The party has around 63 local councilors serving in principal authorities. Mark Williams, then-Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, was defeated at the 2017 general election in his Ceredigion constituency by Ben Lake of Plaid Cymru, whose majority of 104 made the seat one of the most marginal in the country. Wales is currently divided into forty constituencies of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, which elect Members of Parliament to the House of Commons. After the General Election of December 2019, 22 of the Welsh constituencies are represented by Labour MPs, 14 by Conservative MPs, and 4 by Plaid Cymru MPs. On 8 September 2021, the boundary commission for Wales published its proposals for the new constituencies of Wales, reducing the number from 40 to 32. Mark Williams (politician)
Mark Fraser Williams (born 24 March 1966) is a British politician, who was the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats from 2016 to 2017. He is a former Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ceredigion (UK Parliament constituency), Ceredigion constituency, between 2005 United Kingdom general election, 2005 and 2017 United Kingdom general election, 2017. He sat on the Welsh Affairs Select Committee, and in 2006 he became a Shadow Minister for Wales under Menzies Campbell. Williams is a graduate of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and the University of Plymouth, and is now Headteacher of a school in Llangorse near Brecon. Mid and West Wales () is an electoral region of the Senedd, consisting of eight constituencies. The region elects twelve members, eight directly elected constituency members and four additional members. The electoral region was first used in the 1999 Welsh Assembly election, when the National Assembly for Wales was created. Each constituency elects one Member of the Senedd by the first past the post electoral system, and the region as a whole elects four additional or top-up Members of the Senedd, to create a degree of proportional representation. Brecon and Radnorshire ( cy, Brycheiniog a Sir Faesyfed) is a county constituency in Wales of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Created in 1918, it elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post system of election. The constituency is represented by Fay Jones of the Conservative Party, who defeated incumbent Jane Dodds of the Liberal Democrats at the 2019 general election.
