Llanishen
Llanishen (Welsh Llanisien ''llan'' church + ''Isien'' Saint Isan) is a district and community in the north of Cardiff, Wales. Its population as of the 2011 census was 17,417. Llanishen is the home of the former HMRC tax offices, the tallest buildings in north Cardiff and a landmark for miles around. The office complex overlooks the Crystal and Fishguard estates, the Parc Tŷ Glas industrial estate, Llanishen village, leafy suburban roads and parks that constitute the district. Llanishen is also home to a leisure centre and the former Llanishen Reservoir, which is connected to a green corridor which bisects the city. History Originally wooded farm land, in A.D. 535 two monks came eastwards from the small religious settlement of Llandaff, aiming to establish new settlements, or "llans", in the land below Caerphilly Mountain. Llanishen Reservoir
Llanishen Reservoir ( cy, Cronfa Ddŵr Llanisien) is a Victorian reservoir in North Cardiff in Wales. The reservoir is one of the reservoirs constructed as part of the Taff Fawr scheme for supplying water to Cardiff and was completed in 1886. It forms part of the Nant Fawr Corridor from the top of Roath Park to the countryside beyond Cyncoed. The reservoir was used for water supply until the mid-1970s when it became redundant. It was then used for leisure activities and for 'topping up' the adjacent Lisvane Reservoir until it was drained completely. After buying Hyder plc, its new owner Western Power Distribution (WPD), proposed to redevelop the reservoir site, but after a series of objections from national governing bodies, the County Council, local residents and both local and national politicians this was blocked. Lisvane ( cy, Llys-faen) is an affluent community in the north of Cardiff, the capital of Wales, located north of the city centre. Lisvane is generally considered to be one of the wealthiest residential areas of Wales, with an average house price of approximately £440,000 as of 2021, with many properties worth in excess of £1 million. Llanishen Golf Club
Llanishen Golf Club is a golf course in Thornhill, north of Llanishen on the northern outskirts of Cardiff, Wales. It lies across the M4 motorway from Cardiff. The parkland course, which was 5338 yards as of 2005, is set to the backdrop of Caerphilly Mountain. History Llanishen Golf Club was established in 1905. It originally began as Lisvane Golf Club, which predated Radyr Golf Club (est. 1902). In April 1995 a new clubhouse, with a club and lounge bar and restaurant was inaugurated. Between 2007 and 2009 it underwent a change, with a drainage programme to reduce moisture on the greens, and as a result they're some of the driest in Wales. Saint Isan
Saint Isan was a 6th-century saint of South Wales and Patron Saint of Llanishen near Cardiff, Wales. He was said to have been a follower of the 6th-century Celtic teacher St Illtyd. In A.D. 535 he and Saint Edeyrn came eastwards from the small religious settlement of Llandaff, aiming to establish churches, in the area around Caerphilly mountain. The sites they choose had fresh water from the Nant Fawr stream. Isan founded his church on the site of the modern-day Oval at Llanishen. His co-worker Edeyrn was reputed to have travelled widely, and as a result there are churches in North and South Wales dedicated to his memory. St Edeyrn gathered together a community of about 300 that lived and worshipped in the Llanedeyrn area. Rhymney Railway
The Rhymney Railway was a railway company in South Wales, founded to transport minerals and materials to and from collieries and ironworks in the Rhymney Valley of South Wales, and to docks in Cardiff. It opened a main line in 1858, and a limited passenger service was operated in addition. The first line was dependent on the cooperation of the parallel Taff Vale Railway (TVR) for part of the transit, and this relationship was uneasy; the Rhymney Railway built an independent line to Cardiff in 1871. Better relations were created with the London and North Western Railway (LNWR), and later the Great Western Railway (GWR), and two important joint lines with the GWR were built: the Taff Bargoed line (1876) and the Quakers Yard and Merthyr Joint line (1882).
