Katsura Sunshine
is a Canadian traditional Japanese rakugo comic storyteller, theatre producer, and television personality, currently residing in New York City, United States. He was also known in Toronto for his musical version of Aristophanes' "Clouds". Biography Sunshine was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to parents of Slovenian origin. He studied classics at the University of Toronto, where he got his first introduction to the works of the ancient Greek comic playwright, Aristophanes. He became involved in translating, adapting, and performing in versions of Aristophanes' comedies for the Department of Classics. In September 1994, his version of Aristophanes' ''The Clouds'' opened at the Poor Alex Theatre in Toronto, and, buoyed by positive reviews, ran for 15 months before embarking on a tour of central and eastern Canada. ''The Clouds'' ( grc, Νεφέλαι ''Nephelai'') is a Greek comedy play written by the playwright Aristophanes. A lampooning of intellectual fashions in classical Athens, it was originally produced at the City Dionysia in 423BC and was not as well received as the author had hoped, coming last of the three plays competing at the festival that year. It was revised between 420 and 417BC and was thereafter circulated in manuscript form. No copy of the original production survives, and scholarly analysis indicates that the revised version is an incomplete form of Old Comedy. This incompleteness, however, is not obvious in translations and modern performances. Poor Alex Theatre was a theatre company based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Poor Alex opened in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood in the 1960s in a property owned by Ed Mirvish and took its name as a parody of the Mirvish-owned Royal Alexandra Theatre. , known by his stage name , is a Japanese TV presenter and rakugo artist. His former stage name was . Sanshi received this name from his ''shishô'' (master) and one of the celebrated postwar Kamigata Rakugo greats, . Sanshi's "san" came from, originally, being Bunshi's third ''deshi'' (pupil) and "shi" came from the second half of ''shisho''s stage name. Sanshi succeeded his ''shisho'''s stage name in 2012.
