Iryo
Iryo is a brand of Intermodalidad de Levante S.A., a private high-speed rail operator in Spain. The company is jointly owned by Trenitalia, Air Nostrum, and the infrastructure investment fund Globalvia. Trains began operating on the Madrid–Barcelona high-speed rail line in November 2022, in competition with the national railway Renfe's AVE and Avlo services, and the French-owned low-cost carrier Ouigo España. Spain is therefore the first country in Europe with three competing high-speed rail operators. Service began with 12 trains per day on the route between Madrid and Barcelona, sometimes calling at Zaragoza. Iryo added a Madrid– Cuenca–Valencia route in December 2022, with Madrid– Córdoba–Seville/ Malaga trains scheduled to start operating in March 2023 and Madrid–Albacete–Alicante trains announced for June 2023. Ouigo España
Ouigo España is an open-access operator, that operates high-speed services between Madrid and Barcelona in Spain. It is a subsidiary of SNCF, the French national railway company, and uses its trademark Ouigo. History The company was founded on December 13, 2018, under the name of Rielsfera S.A., and on September 28, 2020, it changed its name to Ouigo España S.A., in line with the Ouigo brand, previously introduced in France for low-cost services. Before using the Ouigo brand, Rielsfera considered using the Falbalá brand. After the process initiated by Adif anticipating the liberalization of passenger rail transport, in November 2020 it signed the framework agreement that grants it capacity in the main high-speed corridors. Frecciarossa 1000
The Frecciarossa 1000, is a high-speed train operated by Italian state railway operator Trenitalia. It was co-developed as a joint venture between Italian rail manufacturer Hitachi Rail Italy (initially AnsaldoBreda) and multinational conglomerate Alstom (initially Bombardier Transportation). Both design and production work were divided between the two partner companies. Design work on the train began in 2008, with considerable design work performed by Bertone. It was heavily based on existing products, including Bombardier's Zefiro and AnsaldoBreda's V250 trains. The design was modified in order to conform with the requirements of the Trenitalia tender. Air Nostrum, legally incorporated as ''Air Nostrum Líneas Aéreas del Mediterráneo, S.A.'', is a Spanish regional airline based in Valencia. It currently operates as a franchisee of Iberia as Iberia Regional and an affiliate member of the Oneworld airline alliance. Avlo (, short for Alta Velocidad Low ''Cost'' literally ''"No Frills High Speed"'' ) is the name of the Spanish low-cost high-speed rail service, at the start between of the cities of Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona, by the national rail company Renfe. History Based on the popularity of the French low-cost high-speed rail service Ouigo that was introduced in 2013 by French national rail company SNCF, and keen to encourage train travel on the Spanish high-speed rail network, Renfe was interested in setting up their own such budget service. Madrid–Barcelona High-speed Rail Line
The Madrid–Barcelona high-speed rail line is a standard gauge railway line inaugurated on 20 February 2008. Designed for speeds of and compatibility with neighbouring countries' rail systems, it connects the cities of Madrid and Barcelona in 2 hours 30 minutes. In Barcelona the line is connected with the Perpignan–Barcelona high-speed rail line leading into France which connects it to the European high speed network. Trenitalia is the primary train operator in Italy. A subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, itself owned by the Italian government, the company was established in 2000 following a European Union directive on the deregulation of rail transport. History The Italian government formed Trenitalia to comply with Regulation (European Union), European regulations. The European Commission's First Railway Directive from 1991 (91/440/EC) required separation of accounting between entities which manage the rail infrastructure and entities which provide the actual rail transportation. Variable Gauge
A variable gauge system allows railway vehicles in a train to travel across a break of gauge between two railway networks with different track gauges. For through operation, a train must be equipped with special bogies holding variable gauge wheelsets containing a variable gauge axle (VGA). The gauge is altered by driving the train through a gauge changer or gauge changing facility. In effect, the track widens or narrows. As the train passes through the gauge changer, the wheels are unlocked, are moved closer together, or further apart, and are then re-locked. Installed variable gauge systems exist within the internal network of Spain, and are installed on international links between Spain/France (Spanish train), Sweden/Finland (Swedish train), Poland/Lithuania (Polish train) and Poland/Ukraine (Polish train).
