The history of the Lutheran Church of Australia is the sequence of events related to divisions, mergers and affiliations of Lutheran church organisations from the time Lutheranism first arrived in Australia, to the time of unification of the two main synods in 1966. First Lutheran body in Australia (Kavel-Fritzsche Synod) The first Lutherans to come to Australia in any significant number were immigrants from Prussia, who arrived in 1838 with Pastor August Kavel. This period in Prussia was marked by a persecution of Old Lutherans who refused to use join the Prussian Union under King Frederick Wilhelm III. On 23 and 24 May 1839, Kavel convened a meeting of the elders of the three Prussian settlements at Klemzig, Hahndorf, and Glen Osmond. Bethany, South Australia
Bethany (postcode 5352) is a small village about 2 km south-east of Tanunda in the Barossa Valley. It was originally named Bethanien or sometimes Neu Schlesien - New Silesia, but was changed during the First World War in an attempt to remove all German place names from Australia. Similarly, the German-language school was forced to close by the state government in 1917, with 60 students at the time. Bethany was the first settlement in the Barossa Valley area. It was settled in 1842, by Prussian immigrants who had leased land from George Fife Angas. Lutheranism as a religious movement originated in the early 16th century Holy Roman Empire as an attempt to reform the Roman Catholic Church. The movement originated with the call for a public debate regarding several issues within the Catholic Church by Martin Luther, then a professor of Bible at the young University of Wittenberg. Wilhelm Iwan
Wilhelm Iwan, author, historian, and Lutheran theologian lived from 1871 until 1958. As a historian, he documented the 19th century exodus from Kingdom of Prussia, Prussia (Germany) to America and Australia by a group who sought religious freedom (Prussian Union of churches#Old Lutheran schism, Old Lutheran schism). In 1945 he fled from his homeland and lived the remainder of his life as a refugee in West Germany. The ''Lutheran Hymnal with Supplement'' is the second official hymnal of the Lutheran Church of Australia, first published in its present form in 1989. Matthias Goethe
Matthias Goethe (29 March 1827 – 25 October 1876), also known as Matthias Göthe or Matthias Goëthe, was pastor of the Lutheran Trinity Church in East Melbourne, Australia, for 14 years from 25 March 1853 to 15 December 1867. He helped form the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Victoria, was its first president, and established congregations in Australia, the United States and Mexico. The Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and Other States, commonly known as the Joint Synod of Ohio or the Ohio Synod, was a German-language Lutheran denomination whose congregations were originally located primarily in the U.S. state of Ohio, later expanding to most parts of the United States. The synod was formed on September 14, 1818, and adopted the name Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and Other States by about 1850.
