George Washington Wurts
George Washington Wurts (1843 in Philadelphia – January 25, 1928 in Rome) was an American diplomat and art collector. Early life George Washington Wurts was one of eight children of William Wurts of Trenton, New Jersey. William Wurts, who with his brothers founded the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, left a significant inheritance to his children on his death in 1858. Diplomatic career In 1865 Wurts moved from Philadelphia to Florence, Italy and became an assistant to George Perkins Marsh. Marsh, the first United States minister to the Kingdom of Italy, found the young Wurts to be "cultivated, hard-working, descreet, intensely loyal" and in 1869 Wurts became the Secretary of Legation, a position which he held even after Marsh's departure in 1881 when he was 81 years old. In 1882 Wurts was assigned to St Petersburg, Russia and remained in his post there until 1892 when he was transferred back to Italy. Delaware And Hudson Railway
The Delaware and Hudson Railway (D&H) is a railroad that operates in the Northeastern United States. In 1991, after more than 150 years as an independent railroad, the D&H was purchased by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP). CP operates D&H under its subsidiary Soo Line Corporation which also operates Soo Line Railroad. D&H's name originates from the 1823 New York state corporation charter listing "The President, Managers and Company of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Co." authorizing an establishment of "water communication" between the Delaware River and the Hudson River. Nicknamed "The Bridge Line to New England and Canada," D&H connected New York with Montreal, Quebec and New England. George Perkins Marsh
George Perkins Marsh (March 15, 1801July 23, 1882), an American diplomat and philologist, is considered by some to be America's first environmentalist and by recognizing the irreversible impact of man's actions on the earth, a precursor to the sustainability concept, although "conservationist" would be more accurate. The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Vermont takes its name, in part, from Marsh. His 1864 book ''Man and Nature'' had a great impact in many parts of the world. Henrietta Tower
Henrietta Tower (''Henriette'', ''Enrichetta'') (26 October 1856 – 3 April 1933) was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. While living in Rome, she and her husband, George Washington Wurts, created an art collection containing approximately 3,000 works that was donated on her death in 1933 to Benito Mussolini. The art collection remains in Rome, and their villa and gardens are open to the public. Early life Henrietta Tower was the last of seven children of Charlemagne Tower, a lawyer, businessman, and graduate of Harvard University. On her father’s death in 1889, Tower inherited a vast fortune from his business ventures which included a coal mining operation in Pennsylvania and an iron production plant in Minnesota. Villa Sciarra (Rome)
Villa Sciarra is a park in Rome named for the villa at its centre. It is located between the neighborhoods of Trastevere, Gianicolo and Monteverde Vecchio. __NOTOC__ Location The best approach is from Viale Trastevere. At the Ministry of Education turn onto Via E. Ottaviano Nelli
Ottaviano Nelli (1375–1444?) was an Italian painter of the early Quattrocento. Nelli primarily painted frescoes, but also panel paintings. He had several pupils and two painters were influenced by him. Biography He was born in Gubbio in Umbria to the painter Martino Nelli, and was active there and in Perugia (1400), Urbino, Assisi, and Foligno. Among his pupils was his brother Tommaso, Domenico Di Cecco di Baldi, Giovanni Pintali, Giacomo Di Bedo, and Ubaldo Di Matteo. Nelli was "consul" (a local government representative) for the Sant'Andrea district of Gubbio in 1440 and during the same year, the priors of Perugia had him paint the coat of arms of the duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti with the help of Francesco d'Antonio and Christoforo di Nicoluccio from Perugia. Vincenzo Pagani
Vincenzo Pagani (c. 1490–1568) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance period. Biography Vincenzo was born at Monterubbiano, near Fermo in the region of March to a father who served as a magistrate, but also had an affinity for painting. He appears to have apprenticed in his father's workshop, being influenced by Carlo Crivelli (as shown by canvasses at Ortezzano, from c. 1510). Later he followed the path of Luca Signorelli, as exemplified by a canvas at Corridonia from c. 1517. He is said to have moved to Rome, and worked in the studio of Raphael, but like many other artists fled Rome after 1521, that is after the papacy of Leo X. The Museo Nazionale del Palazzo di Venezia is a state museum in Rome (Italy), housed in the palace of the same name together with the important Library of Archaeology and Art History.
