Gyrosteus
''Gyrosteus'' is an extinct genus of very large ray-finned fish belonging to the family Chondrosteidae. It comprises the type species, ''Gyrosteus mirabilis'', which lived during the early Toarcian (Late Early Jurassic) in what is now northern Europe. A possible second species, ''"Gyrosteus" subdeltoideus'', is known from otoliths. Fossil remains of ''G. mirabilis'' have been recovered from the Whitby Mudstone Formation, United Kingdom, and from Ahrensburg erratics assemblage in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. It was mentioned but not formally described in subsequent publications and was left as a '' nomen nudum'' for more than 25 years. Chondrosteidae
Chondrosteidae is a family (biology), family of extinct marine actinopterygian fishes in the order Acipenseriformes. Three genera are known from the Early Jurassic of Europe, ''Chondrosteus'', ''Gyrosteus'', and ''Strongylosteus''. Included species were of large size, with body lengths ranging from up to . Their skeleton was largely made up of bones (unlike living Chondrostei, chondrosteans), but ossification was reduced compared to other ray-fins. Evolutionary relationships Chondrosteidae are related with the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous Asia, Asian family Peipiaosteidae, and with living sturgeon and paddlefish (Acipenseroidei). The Toarcian is, in the ICS' geologic timescale, an age and stage in the Early or Lower Jurassic. It spans the time between 182.7 Ma (million years ago) and 174.1 Ma. It follows the Pliensbachian and is followed by the Aalenian. The Toarcian Age began with the Toarcian turnover, the extinction event that sets its fossil faunas apart from the previous Pliensbachian age. It is believed to have ended with a global cooling event known as the Comptum Cooling Event, although whether it represented a worldwide event is controversial. Hyomandibula
The hyomandibula, commonly referred to as hyomandibular one( la, os hyomandibulare, from el, hyoeides, "upsilon-shaped" (υ), and Latin: mandibula, "jawbone") is a set of bones that is found in the hyoid region in most fishes. It usually plays a role in suspending the jaws and/or operculum (teleostomi only). It is commonly suggested that in tetrapods (land animals), the hyomandibula evolved into the columella (stapes). Evolutionary context In jawless fishes a series of gills opened behind the mouth, and these gills became supported by cartilaginous elements. The first set of these elements surrounded the mouth to form the jaw. Arthur Smith Woodward
Sir Arthur Smith Woodward, FRS (23 May 1864 – 2 September 1944) was an English palaeontologist, known as a world expert in fossil fish. He also described the Piltdown Man fossils, which were later determined to be fraudulent. He is not related to Henry Woodward, whom he replaced as curator of the Geology Department of the British Museum of Natural History. Biography Woodward was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England and was educated there and at Owens College, Manchester.
