Gulf Ice Hockey Championship
The Gulf Ice Hockey Championship, also known as the GCC Gulf Ice Hockey Championships, is an international ice hockey competition involving countries from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The inaugural tournament took place on May 25 to May 30 in Kuwait City, Kuwait, and was organized by the Kuwait Ice Hockey Association. The championship has featured teams from six countries since its formation and currently consists of Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The United Arab Emirates has won all four editions of the championship, while Kuwait has finished second on three occasions and Qatar on one. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. In ice hockey, two opposing teams use ice hockey sticks to control, advance and shoot a closed, vulcanized, rubber disc called a " puck" into the other team's goal. Each goal is worth one point. International Ice Hockey Federation
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF; french: Fédération internationale de hockey sur glace; german: Internationale Eishockey-Föderation) is a worldwide governing body for ice hockey. It is based in Zurich, Switzerland, and has 83 member countries. The IIHF maintains the IIHF World Ranking based on international ice hockey tournaments. Rules of play for IIHF events differ from hockey in North America and the rules of the National Hockey League (NHL). Decisions of the IIHF can be appealed through the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. The IIHF maintains its own hall of fame for international ice hockey. The IIHF Hall of Fame was founded in 1997, and has been located within the Hockey Hall of Fame since 1998. 2022 GCC Games
The 2022 GCC Games was the third edition of multi-sport event for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. It was held in Kuwait, from 16 to 31 May 2022. A total of more than 1,500 athletes and 500 officials participated in 16 sports. Female athletes competed for the first time at the GCC Games in this edition. The six sports involving female athletes are athletics, basketball (3×3), cycling, futsal, esports, and padel. Background The Games were originally scheduled to take place from 3 to 14 April 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on 3 March 2020, the event was postponed. The 2016 Gulf Ice Hockey Championship was the fourth Gulf Ice Hockey Championship. It took place between 28 January and 2 February 2016 in Doha, Qatar. The United Arab Emirates won the tournament after defeating Qatar in the gold medal game, claiming their fourth title of the championships. Kuwait finished third after defeating Oman in the bronze medal game. Overview The 2016 Gulf Ice Hockey Championship was organised by the Qatar Winter Sports Committee and began on 28 January 2016 in Doha, Qatar with the games being played at Villagio’s Ice Court. The United Arab Emirates men's national ice hockey team, United Arab Emirates won the tournament after defeating Kuwait national ice hockey team, Kuwait in the final, claiming their third title. The 2010 Gulf Ice Hockey Championship was the first Gulf Ice Hockey Championship. It took place between 25 May and 30 May 2010 in Kuwait City, Kuwait. Bahrain Men's National Ice Hockey Team
The Bahraini national ice hockey team ( ar, منتخب البحرين لهوكي الجليد) is the national ice hockey team of Bahrain. History Bahrain played its first game in a 2010 exhibition game against Kuwait in which they lost, 10–3. The following year, Bahrain competed in the Premier Division of the 2011 Asian Winter Games. In the first two games they were beaten by Malaysia (25–0) and by Thailand (29–0). They finished the tournament losing all six of their games and placing last on the table. The Saudi Arabia national ice hockey team ( ar, منتخب المملكة العربية السعودية لهوكي الجليد) is the national men's ice hockey team of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is not a member of the IIHF and therefore not eligible to enter any IIHF World Championship events. History The Saudi Arabian Nationals first played ice hockey in the early 1990s. Ice hockey was played in Riyadh at the Fal Shopping Centre Ice Rink, a rink 1/3 the size of a standard North American-sized ice rink.
