Field Hockey At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Tournament
The men's field hockey tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics was the 21st edition of the field hockey event for men at the Summer Olympic Games. It was held over a thirteen-day period beginning on 11 August, and culminating with the medal finals on 23 August. All games were played at the hockey field constructed on the Olympic Green in Beijing, China. Germany won the gold medal for the third time after defeating Spain 1–0 in the final. Defending champions Australia won the bronze medal by defeating Netherlands 6–2. This was the only edition India has missed out in its Olympic history. Competition format The twelve teams in the tournament were divided into two pools of six, with each team initially playing round-robin games within their pool. The FIH Men's World Ranking is a ranking system for men's national teams in field hockey. The teams of the member nations of International Hockey Federation (FIH), field hockey's world governing body, are ranked based on their game results. The rankings were introduced in October 2003. The 2007 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship was the 11th edition of the Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship, the biennial international men's field hockey championship of Europe organized by the European Hockey Federation. Field hockey at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro was held over a ten-day period beginning on July 15 and culminating with the medal finals on July 24 and July 25. All games were played at the Círculo Militar Deodoro. Each team was allowed to enter a maximum of sixteen athletes. The winner of each tournament qualified to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Argentina were the reigning Pan American Games champions in both the men's and women's competitions. The men failed to defend their title, losing to Canada 5–4 in a penalty shoot-out in the final. The women defeated the United States 4–2 in the final, winning the tournament for the 6th time. The 2007 African Olympic Qualifier was the first edition of the African field hockey qualification tournament for the Summer Olympics for men and women. It was held from 14 to 22 July 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya.
