Erdan Island
Erdan Island (Erhtan Island) (, also ) is an island in Lieyu Township, Kinmen County (Quemoy), Taiwan. The island has been called Seao-tan. Erdan Island is from Greater Kinmen Island and from Xiamen (Amoy) Island. History On February 21, 1942, more than fifty anti-Japanese dissidents were taken to the island, tortured and killed in a mass execution. Chinese Nationalist spokesmen reported that Chinese Communists shelled Dadan and Erdan between June 26–28, 1957. At that time, Chinese Nationalist strength on the islands was around 1,100 men. On September 6, 2011, President Ma Ying-jeou visited with the troops stationed on Erdan Island. In November 2013, the island was designated as battlefield culture landscape by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Kinmen County Government. Lieyu
Lieyu Township (Liehyu) (; pinyin: ''Lièyǔ Xiāng''; Hokkien POJ: ''Lia̍t-sū-hiong'') is a rural township in Kinmen County (Quemoy), Fujian Province, Republic of China (Taiwan). It mainly consists of Lesser Kinmen (; Pīnyīn: ''Xiǎojīnmén''), Dadan, and Erdan, three islands of the ROC located to the west of Greater Kinmen and immediately to the east of Xiamen (Amoy) of the People's Republic of China. Ma Ying-jeou
Ma Ying-jeou ( zh, 馬英九, born 13 July 1950) is a Hong Kong-born Taiwanese politician who served as president of the Republic of China from 2008 to 2016. Previously, he served as justice minister from 1993 to 1996 and mayor of Taipei from 1998 to 2006. He served as chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) from 2005 to 2007 and from 2009 to 2014. Ma first won the presidency by 58.45% of the popular vote in the presidential election of 2008, and was re-elected in 2012 with 51.6% of the vote. ''Kinmen Daily News'' (KMDN; ) is a newspaper owned by Kinmen County Government in Kinmen County (Quemoy), Fujian Province, Republic of China ( Taiwan). History The predecessor of the Kinmen Daily News was ''Chunghwa Cheng Chi Pao'' (, Zhōnghuá-zhèngqìbào) from Nancheng, Jiangxi, which retreated to Quemoy following the Chinese civil war. Longhai District () is a District in Zhangzhou, in the south of Fujian province, China. Longhai spans an area of , and, as of 2016, it has a population of approximately 736,400. Gangwei () is a town in Longhai City, in Zhangzhou, Fujian, China (PRC). History In the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1958, Daomei () in Gangwei was one of the areas from which PLA forces shelled Kinmen County (Quemoy), Republic of China (Taiwan). The Daomei milita dug eleven trenches and built 136 air raid shelters. On September 8, Chinese Nationalist forces fired 1,285 shells at Wu Yu, destroying 151 homes and a granary. 37 members of the Daomei militia took eight boats to Wu Yu bringing 130,000 ''jin'' of food for the islanders. Dadan Island
Dadan Island (Tatan, Taitan Island, Tae-tan/Taetan) (, originally ) is an island in Lieyu Township, Kinmen County, Fujian Province, Republic of China (Taiwan). The island is in the Taiwan Strait, along the coast of Mainland China. It is located approximately to the southwest of Lesser Kinmen (Lieyu) and approximately from Xiamen (Amoy). History In March 1853, HMS ''Rattler'' struck a sunken rock at Amoy, China and was severely damaged. She was beached at Tae-tan (Dadan) for repairs. Since 1949, Dadan Island has several times become the battlefront of conflicts between the People's Liberation Army and the Republic of China Armed Forces.
