Electoral District Of Canning
The electoral district of Canning was an electorate in the state of Western Australia. The electorate, which was named for the Canning River which ran through it, was first contested at the 1897 election, but was abolished prior to the 1901 election, with most of its territory transferred to the new seat of South Perth. However, for the 1904 election, South Perth was abolished and Canning re-created. Canning was abolished for a second time in the 1988 redistribution. Canning covered much of Perth's inner southern region, being reduced progressively as suburban areas such as Applecross, South Perth, Victoria Park and Belmont developed and became populous enough to require their own electorates. By the time of its dissolution it corresponded approximately with the present-day Kenwick district and had become a safe Labor Party seat. The Canning River (Djarlgarra in Nyungar) is a major tributary of the Swan River in the South West Land Division of Western Australia. It is home to much wildlife including dolphins, pelicans, swans and many other bird species. Redcliffe, Western Australia
Redcliffe is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located in the City of Belmont local government area. Kenwick, Western Australia
Kenwick, Western Australia is a mixed residential, light industrial and semi-rural suburb located in the south-east of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Gosnells. A large portion of the suburb is composed of remnant agricultural land organized as smallholdings of several acres, as well as relatively pristine native wetlands, including the Brixton Street Wetlands which are of significant conservation value. It also contains several sites of historical significance relating to its status as one of the early farming communities of the Swan River Colony. Ferndale is a southeastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Canning. It is approximately from Perth's central business district. History The name Ferndale originated from developers who decided not to proceed with the City of Canning's choice of Shearnstead. In 1965, the name change was approved. Murdoch was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. It existed from 1977 to 1989 and again from 1996 to 2008. Murdoch was named for Sir Walter Murdoch, a prominent academic for whom Murdoch University, which was located in the electorate, was also named. The district was regarded as a safe seat for the Liberal Party, which held the seat for its entirety of two existences. Beeloo was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1956 to 1968. Beeloo was named after the Beeloo, a subgroup of the Whadjuk Nyungar people, who inhabited an area that later became the south eastern suburbs of Perth, south of the Swan and east of the Canning, prior to European settlement. Beeloo was considered to be a safe seat for the Labor Party, and only had one member, Colin Jamieson. History Beeloo was initially within the vast electorate of Canning. In 1911, just 50 people voted at the Belmont and Welshpool Road booths, and by 1950, this had grown to 410 at Belmont, 685 at Welshpool and 692 at Queens Park. Melville was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1950 to 1996. The district was based in the southern suburbs of Perth. Middle Swan was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1930 to 1962. The district was located in the eastern suburbs of Perth. Despite its name, it did not include its namesake suburb (its name came from being centrally located along the Swan River), but included areas such as Bayswater, Morley, Inglewood and parts of Maylands north of the river, and Belmont, Rivervale and Lathlain south of the river. First created for the 1930 state election, the seat was won by James Hegney of the Labor Party. Hegney held the seat until his defeat by Liberal Party candidate Bill Grayden at the 1947 state election. Grayden resigned the seat mid-term to contest, successfully, the division of Swan at the 1949 federal election. Orrong Road is a major arterial road servicing the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia as well as the south-eastern continuation of the Graham Farmer Freeway. It is a dual carriageway for its entire length, with multiple sets of traffic lights. In addition to servicing the southeastern suburbs of Perth, the road provides a vital connection from the Perth CBD to Perth Airport, the Kewdale Freight Terminal and the Darling Scarp. The Electoral district of Victoria Park is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Victoria Park is named for the inner southeastern Perth suburb of Victoria Park which falls within its borders. History Victoria Park was created at the 1929 redistribution, at which five new metropolitan electorates were created to replace former Goldfields seats in Parliament. The seat is considered a safe Labor Party seat, and has been held by the party for all but eight years since its creation.
