Dussen
Dussen is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is a part of the municipality of Altena, and is located about 12 km south of Gorinchem. Dussen Castle is located near the village. History The village was first mentioned in 1156 as Iacobus de Dussan, and has been named after a distributary of the Meuse. The etymology of the river is clear. Dussen was destroyed by the St. Elizabeth's flood of 1421. In the late-15th century, the land was reclaimed by '' poldering''. It was flooded again in 1892 and severely damaged in 1944 and 1945 during World War II. Dussen Castle was built during the 14th century. In 1421, it was destroyed a flood, and rebuilt about 50 years later. It was severely damaged by Spanish troops during Eighty Years' War, and restored in 1608. Dussen Castle is a water castle that got its peculiar form after being destroyed by the St. Elizabeth's flood of 1421. History The Lords of Dussen appear The Lords of Dussen were first mentioned in 1156. The lordhip Dussen was first mentioned in 1200. In 1288 a Jan van Dussen fought on the Brabant side in the Battle of Worringen. He broke his leg, as told by Jan van Heelu: It is possible that these Lords already had a kind of castle, but no remains of such supposed castles have been found. Dussen Castle is built The first version of Dussen Castle had a lone square tower built in or before 1330. It probably had auxiliary buildings on a bailey but no remains of these have been found. Altena is a municipality in the Netherlands, on a river island in the very north of the province of North Brabant, bordering the provinces of Gelderland and South Holland. Nearby cities are Dordrecht in the west, Gorinchem in the north (both in South Holland), and Waalwijk in the south. Approximately 56,000 people live in an area of about 201 km², making Altena the largest municipality of North Brabant in terms of land area (surpassing Meierijstad). Werkendam () is a town and a former municipality in the southern Netherlands. The municipality, part of Land van Heusden en Altena, contained a large part of De Biesbosch area as is located in the province of North Brabant.
