Donauuferbahn (Vienna)
The Donauuferbahn () is a railway line in Vienna, Austria. It runs along the west bank of the Danube river. At the northern end, the line connects with the Franz-Josefs-Bahn and Suburban line. At the southern end, the line continues as the near the . The line is owned and operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and is mostly freight-only. Route The northern terminus of the line is at , where it joins the Franz-Josefs-Bahn. The line runs north–south along the west bank of the Danube. South of Wien Nussdorf, the line crosses the Donaukanal and then joins the Suburban line. This section is the only part of the line hosting regular passenger service, the S45 of the Vienna S-Bahn. The Danube ( ; ) is a river that was once a long-standing frontier of the Roman Empire and today connects 10 European countries, running through their territories or being a border. The Emperor Franz Joseph Railway (German: ''Kaiser-Franz-Josephs-Bahn'', KFJB) was an Austrian private railway company, named after Emperor Franz Joseph I. It operated railway lines from the Austrian capital Vienna to Prague and Eger (Cheb) in Bohemia. History The stock company (''Aktiengesellschaft'') was founded by the Bohemian noble Prince Johann Adolf II of Schwarzenberg (1799–1888), a brother of former State Chancellor Prince Felix of Schwarzenberg, who had a first long railway line built from Vienna to Eger, starting after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. Suburban Line (Vienna)
The Suburban line (german: Vorortelinie) is a railway line in the city of Vienna. It runs approximately from to , running around the northwest side of the city. It hosts the S45 service of the Vienna S-Bahn. Route The line begins at , and runs parallel to the Western railway line to . Beyond Wien Penzing, the Western railway line continues east to Wien Westbahnhof, while the Suburban line turns to run northeast, partially in tunnel, to . Donaukanal
The Donaukanal ("Danube Canal") is a former arm of the river Danube, now regulated as a water channel (since 1598), within the city of Vienna, Austria. It is long and, unlike the Danube itself, it borders Vienna's city centre, Innere Stadt, where the Wien River (''Wienfluss'') flows into it."Donaukanal", aeiou Encyclopedia (see below: External links). The Donaukanal bifurcates from the main river at the Nußdorf weir and lock complex, in Döbling, and joins it again just upstream of the "Praterspitz", at the Prater park in Simmering. S45 (Vienna S-Bahn)
Line S45 of the Vienna S-Bahn, also known as the Vorortelinie ''(lit. Suburban Line)'' or Wiener Vorortelinie ''(lit. Vienna Suburban Line)'', is an electrified commuter rail service operating in Vienna, Austria. The S45 is the only S-Bahn route to operate entirely within Viennese city limits, and it is the most frequently operated single S-Bahn service, with intervals of 10 minutes during weekdays and 15 minutes during weekends and holidays. The S45 opened on 31 May 1987. It follows the route of part of the original Stadtbahn and still bears the architecture of the original Stadtbahn. Drivers based in Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and Wien Westbahnhof operate trains on the route. Unlike the Pink line or the Stammstrecke (trunk line), it is the only line servicing the route. U6 (Vienna U-Bahn)
Line U6 is a line on the Vienna U-Bahn. It currently has 24 stations and runs 17.3 km from to . It is connected to at , at and at . The first section of the line opened in 1989, and was completed at its present length in 1996. It is the only metro line in the DACH countries which is not operated by third rail but by overhead wire; this is because the centre portion of the line is an elevated part of the former Vienna Stadtbahn system, which was operated by overhead wire. When the line was transformed to rapid transit standards, it was considered too expensive to rebuild the elevated portion for high-floor trains and third rail, as it was done with the U4.
