Dona Tututa
Epifânia de Freitas Silva Ramos Évora, better known as Dona Tututa or Tututa Évora (January 6, 1919 – January 26, 2014) was a Cape Verdean composer and a pianist. She is considered one of Cape Verde's legendary figure, she was the author of several songs including ''Grito d' Dor'', ''Sentimento'' (''Sentiment''), ''Mãe Tigre'' (''Mother of the Tiger'') and ''Vida Torturada'' (''Tortured Life''). Cesária Évora, Bana, Humbertona and her daughter Magda Évora are some of the performers who recorded her songs. Biography She was the daughter of António da Silva Ramos, who was Anton Tchiche. Her brother Tchufe (Pedro Alcântara Silva Ramos) was a guitarist and singer. When she was a teenager, Tututa started her piano studies. She professionally played at Café Royal. Sal (Portuguese for "salt") is an island in Cape Verde. Sal is a tourist destination with white sandy beaches and over 350 days of sunshine a year. It is one of the three sandy eastern islands of the Cape Verde archipelago in the central Atlantic Ocean, off the west coast of Africa. Cesária Évora
Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s. Bana (singer)
Adriano Gonçalves (5 March 1932 – 13 July 2013), known by his stage name Bana and called the " King of Morna", was a Cape Verdean singer and performer of the morna style, the plaintive, melodic lament which is a staple musical style of the country. Biography He was born in Mindelo on 5 March 1932, some sources said he was born on 11 March. In his childhood years, he was surrounded by music with local singers. At age four, he appeared with local singers. Bana, who was over seven feet tall, began his musical career during Portuguese colonial rule, when he worked as a handyman and bodyguard for the legendary Cabo Verdean composer and performer, B. Leza. In the 1950s, the singer, uncle of Cesária Évora taught Bana and many other artists the art of morna songs. Val Xalino
Val Xalino (born August 19, 1953) is a Capeverdean singer and producer who currently resides in Gothenburg, Sweden. He is the father of the Cape Verdean singer and producer Robert Xalino. Biography Val Xalino was born in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente to his mother Maria who was a cook and his father Armando de Jon who was a great musician from the island during the 1950s and the 1960s. He made guitars along with his brothers Eduardo de Jon and Eddy Moreno. Together with his son Roberto, he later immigrated to Sweden and lived in the city of Gothenburg in the western part in 1977, Val immigrated later. His first album was ''Dilema d’imigração'' on the dilemma on immigration of the immigrants which was common in Cape Verde at the time. Women Composers
Women composers of Western classical music are disproportionately absent from music textbooks and concert programs that constitute the Western canon, even though many women have composed music. The reasons for women's absence are various. The musicologist Marcia Citron writing in 1990 noted that many works of musical history and anthologies of music had very few, or sometimes no, references to and examples of music written by women.
