The Catholic Church in French Guiana is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. Around 75% of the population is Catholic and the dependency forms a single diocese - the Diocese of Cayenne. Erected as the apostolic prefecture of French Guiana-Cayenne in 1651, it remained a prefecture until elevated to a Vicariate in January 1933, and finally to the Diocese of Cayenne in February 1956. The Diocese is currently a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Fort-de-France et Saint-Pierre on the island of Martinique. The current bishop is Emmanuel Marie Philippe Louis Lafont, appointed in June 2004. That was actually the former bishop but the Wikipedia editors have not updated it. The new bishop is Louis Sankalé. Apostolic Prefecture
An apostolic prefect or prefect apostolic is a priest who heads what is known as an apostolic prefecture, a 'pre-diocesan' missionary jurisdiction where the Catholic Church is not yet sufficiently developed to have it made a diocese. Although it usually has an (embryonal) see, it is often not called after such city but rather after a natural or administrative (in many cases colonial) geographical area. If a prefecture grows and flourishes, it may be elevated to an apostolic vicariate, headed by a titular bishop, in the hope that with time the region will generate enough Catholics and stability for its Catholic institutions, to warrant being established as a diocese. Emmanuel Marie Philippe Louis Lafont (born 26 October 1945) is a French prelate of the Catholic Church who was Bishop of Cayenne in French Guiana from 2004 to 2020. Lafont was born in Paris and studied in France and Rome; the Pontifical Gregorian University granted him a Licentiate in Theology. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Tours on 2 August 1970. His posts have included: assistant parish priest, student ministry, youth ministry for Tours Diocese, and fourteen years of missionary work in Soweto, South Africa. While in Africa as part of the Fidei donum initiative, he also taught at Pretoria's major seminary.
