Cape Simpson (Greenland)
Cape Simpson ( da, Kap Simpson) is a headland in the Greenland Sea, Northeast Greenland. Administratively it is part of the NE Greenland National Park. History This headland was named "Cape Simpson" in 1822 by William Scoresby (1789 – 1857). Numerous remains of former Inuit habitation were found at that time in the area near the cape. Materials for a Norwegian hunting station known as "Simpson Stranda" were brought to the area of the headland by Norwegian ship ''Veslekari'' in 1929, but the hut was never built. Another hut, "Kap Simpson Hytte", was built by the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol between 1955 and 1956. Geography Cape Simpson is located in the Greenland Sea, north of Cape Biot on the opposite side of the mouth of Davy Sound. Cape Simpson rises at the southeastern end of Traill Island, whose shore trending northwest of the cape forms the northeastern coast of Davy Sound. It is a conspicuous headland. In geography, a cape is a headland or a promontory of large size extending into a body of water, usually the sea.Whittow, John (1984). ''Dictionary of Physical Geography''. This also makes them prone to natural forms of erosion, mainly tidal actions, which results in them having a relatively short geological lifespan. Capes can be formed by glaciers, volcanoes, and changes in sea level. Erosion plays a large role in each of these methods of formation. Davy Sound
The Davy Sound ( da, Davy Sund) is a sound in King Christian X Land, Northeast Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park zone. History The sound was named and put on the map by William Scoresby (1789 – 1857) in 1822 in honour of Cornish chemist and inventor Sir Humphry Davy (1778 – 1829), president of the Royal Society from 1820 to 1827. In 1899, during the Swedish Greenland Expedition on which Swedish Arctic explorer Alfred Gabriel Nathorst found and first mapped King Oscar Fjord, he made southwards for the Davy Sound after having entered from Antarctic Sound. But Davy sound was blocked by ice and Nathorst had to travel back north. Nathorst proposed 72° 10′ N as the northern limit of Davy Sound, which is roughly the present day geographic limit. Lieut. P. Greenland Sea
The Greenland Sea is a body of water that borders Greenland to the west, the Svalbard archipelago to the east, Fram Strait and the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Norwegian Sea and Iceland to the south. The Greenland Sea is often defined as part of the Arctic Ocean, sometimes as part of the Atlantic Ocean. However, definitions of the Arctic Ocean and its seas tend to be imprecise or arbitrary. In general usage the term "Arctic Ocean" would exclude the Greenland Sea. In oceanographic studies the Greenland Sea is considered part of the Nordic Seas, along with the Norwegian Sea. The Nordic Seas are the main connection between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans and, as such, could be of great significance in a possible shutdown of thermohaline circulation. NE Greenland National Park
Northeast Greenland National Park ( kl, Kalaallit Nunaanni nuna eqqissisimatitaq, da, Grønlands Nationalpark) is the world's largest national park and the 10th largest protected area (the only larger protected areas all consist mostly of sea). Established in 1974 and expanded to its present size in 1988, it protects of the interior and northeastern coast of Greenland and is bigger than all but 29 of the world's 195 countries. William Scoresby
William Scoresby (5 October 178921 March 1857) was an English whaler, Arctic explorer, scientist and clergyman. Early years Scoresby was born in the village of Cropton near Pickering south-west of Whitby in Yorkshire. His father, William Scoresby (1760–1829), made a fortune in the Arctic whale fishery and was also the inventor of the barrel crow's nest. The son made his first voyage with his father at the age of eleven, but then returned to school, where he remained until 1803. After this he became his father's constant companion, and accompanied him as chief officer of the whaler ''Resolution'' when on 25 May 1806, he succeeded in reaching 81°30' N. lat. Sirius Dog Sled Patrol
The Sirius Dog Sled Patrol ( da, Slædepatruljen Sirius), known informally as ''Siriuspatruljen'' (the Sirius Patrol) and formerly known as ''North-East Greenland Sledge Patrol'' and ''Resolute Dog Sled Patrol'', is an elite Danish naval unit. It conducts long-range reconnaissance patrolling, and enforces Danish sovereignty in the Arctic wilderness of northern and eastern Greenland, an area that includes the Northeast Greenland National Park, which is the largest national park in the world. Cape Biot
Cape Biot ( da, Kap Biot) is a headland in the Greenland Sea, Northeast Greenland, Sermersooq municipality. History This headland was named "Cape Biot" by William Scoresby (1789 – 1857) in 1822 to honour physicist, astronomer and mathematician Jean Baptiste Biot (1774 – 1862). A hunting station known as "Kap Biot Station" was built by four Danes that had been brought on ship ''Furenak'' in 1940 at the NW end of Fleming Fjord below the promontory of Cape Biot at the time of WWII. As part of a covert operation, the purpose was to establish a weather station to support Third Reich military activity in the North Atlantic. On 7 September 1940 patrol boat Fridtjof Nansen of the Free Norwegian Navy evacuated the personnel to Iceland and destroyed the station by fire. Traill Island
Traill Island ( da, Traill Ø) is a large island in eastern Greenland. It is named after zoologist Thomas Stewart Traill. The island is a part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. Geography Traill Island is a coastal island located in the desolate region of Eastern Greenland on the eastern side of King Oscar Fjord, northeast of Davy Sound.
