Davy Sound
The Davy Sound ( da, Davy Sund) is a sound in King Christian X Land, Northeast Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park zone. History The sound was named and put on the map by William Scoresby (1789 – 1857) in 1822 in honour of Cornish chemist and inventor Sir Humphry Davy (1778 – 1829), president of the Royal Society from 1820 to 1827. In 1899, during the Swedish Greenland Expedition on which Swedish Arctic explorer Alfred Gabriel Nathorst found and first mapped King Oscar Fjord, he made southwards for the Davy Sound after having entered from Antarctic Sound. But Davy sound was blocked by ice and Nathorst had to travel back north. Nathorst proposed 72° 10′ N as the northern limit of Davy Sound, which is roughly the present day geographic limit. Lieut. P. Traill Island
Traill Island ( da, Traill Ø) is a large island in eastern Greenland. It is named after zoologist Thomas Stewart Traill. The island is a part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. Geography Traill Island is a coastal island located in the desolate region of Eastern Greenland on the eastern side of King Oscar Fjord, northeast of Davy Sound. Geographical Society Island lies to the north, separated by a narrow channel, the Vega Sound. The southernmost point of the island is Cape Simpson. Mesters Vig
Mestersvig, also called Mesters Vig, is a military outpost located in Scoresby Land, on the southwestern shore of Davy Sound in King Christian X Land, NE Greenland. It has a 1,800 m gravel airstrip . This airport is located near the Stauning Alps mountainous area. History From 1956 to 1963, Mestersvig was a zinc and lead mine. Later Mestersvig used to be the only permanent station in the Northeast Greenland National Park but all of the 1986 population of 40 has been split up into the three newer Northeast Greenland National Park research stations (Danmarkshavn, Nord and Daneborg) except a permanent population of two people, although tourists visit the station occasionally. In September 2015, as part of the newest defence agreement to increase the enforcement of sovereignty in Greenland, Mission Mestersvig was executed. Antarctic Haven ( da, Antarctic Havn) is a bay in King Christian X Land, Northeastern Greenland. Administratively it lies in the Northeast Greenland National Park area. Cape Biot
Cape Biot ( da, Kap Biot) is a headland in the Greenland Sea, Northeast Greenland, Sermersooq municipality. History This headland was named "Cape Biot" by William Scoresby (1789 – 1857) in 1822 to honour physicist, astronomer and mathematician Jean Baptiste Biot (1774 – 1862). A hunting station known as "Kap Biot Station" was built by four Danes that had been brought on ship ''Furenak'' in 1940 at the NW end of Fleming Fjord below the promontory of Cape Biot at the time of WWII. As part of a covert operation, the purpose was to establish a weather station to support Third Reich military activity in the North Atlantic. On 7 September 1940 patrol boat Fridtjof Nansen of the Free Norwegian Navy evacuated the personnel to Iceland and destroyed the station by fire. Cape Simpson (Greenland)
Cape Simpson ( da, Kap Simpson) is a headland in the Greenland Sea, Northeast Greenland. Administratively it is part of the NE Greenland National Park. History This headland was named "Cape Simpson" in 1822 by William Scoresby (1789 – 1857). Numerous remains of former Inuit habitation were found at that time in the area near the cape. Materials for a Norwegian hunting station known as "Simpson Stranda" were brought to the area of the headland by Norwegian ship ''Veslekari'' in 1929, but the hut was never built. Another hut, "Kap Simpson Hytte", was built by the Sirius Dog Sled Patrol between 1955 and 1956. Geography Cape Simpson is located in the Greenland Sea, north of Cape Biot on the opposite side of the mouth of Davy Sound. Jameson Land
Jameson Land is a peninsula in eastern Greenland. Geography Jameson Land is bounded to the southwest by Scoresby Sound (the world's largest fjord), to the northwest by the Stauning Alps, to the north by Scoresby Land, to the northeast by the Fleming Fjord and the Nathorst Fjord of the Greenland Sea, and to the east by Carlsberg Fjord, the smaller Liverpool Land peninsula branching off, and Hurry Inlet. Its northeastern end is Cape Biot. The Mestersvig military base is located in the northern part of the peninsula.
