Camp Julien
Camp Julien was the main base for the Canada's role in the Afghanistan War, Canadian contingent of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul, Afghanistan. The camp was named after Lance Corporal George Patrick Julien, a Canadian Army soldier who was awarded the Military Medal as a Private (rank), Private, for his actions at Hill 187 in Korea in May 1953. LCpl Julien was a member of 3 Royal Canadian Regiment, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, which was the first unit to occupy Camp Julien. Camp Julien was ready for full-scale occupancy in the late summer of 2003 with the arrival of Roto 0. At its height the camp housed 2,000 Canadian soldiers and over 400 civilian workers, approximately half of whom were Nepalese. Canada's role in the Afghanistan War began in late 2001. Canada sent its first element of soldiers secretly in October 2001 from Joint Task Force 2,Maloney, S., ''Enduring the Freedom: A Rogue Historian in Afghanistan'', Potomac Books Inc., Washington, D.C., 2005 and the first contingents of regular Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) troops arrived in Afghanistan in January–February 2002. 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (3 RCR) is a regular force light infantry battalion of the Canadian Forces. 3 RCR's most notable service occurred in Korea, Germany, Bosnia and Afghanistan.
