Cabañas, Cuba
Cabañas is a village and ''consejo popular'' of the municipality of Mariel, in the Artemisa Province, on the northeast coast in western Cuba. History Prior to 1970 was a municipality of Pinar del Río Province. Cabañas bay is a harbor with industrial and fishing facilities, with an important base of the Cuban Navy. From November to December 1958, the town was the site of a massacre by anti-communist forces during the Cuban Revolution. Authorities began by killing two farmers who they thought were connected to an earlier guerilla attack on Government bases. The soldiers are reported to have killed dozens of suspected communists and witnesses until December. The Havana Times recorded the names of twelve people who died during the massacre. Havana Times
''Havana Times'' is an independent Cuban blog and online magazine founded in 2008. The online publication is edited in Nicaragua. Most of its contributors live in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo. There are also Cuban contributors in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Canada, Ecuador and Mexico and volunteer translators in the Netherlands, the United States and the United Kingdom. Overview The project began as early as 2007, and the magazine was launched 2008 in Cuba, with Circles Robinson as editor. Robinson, a US native, moved to Cuba in 2001. He worked as a translator for ESTI, Cuba's official translation agency, but left Cuba after his work contract was not renewed in 2009, a fact that he associates with his role in ''Havana Times''. As of 2009, Robinson edits the magazine from Nicaragua and makes occasional trips to Cuba to meet with contributors, who have suffered harassment and threats from Cuban authorities in several occasions. Artemisa
Artemisa () is a municipality and city in Cuba, formerly part of La Habana Province. According to a law approved by the Cuban National Assembly in August 2010, Artemisa became the capital city of the newly formed Artemisa Province, which comprises eight municipalities of the former La Habana Province and three from Pinar del Río. It has an area of 642.0 square kilometers and a population of over 85,000 inhabitants (2017). Due to its coffee crops in the past and the bucolic local landscape, it has received the nickname "Jardín de Cuba" (Garden of Cuba) and is also known as the "Villa Roja" (Red Village) due to the color of its soils. Guanajay
Guanajay is a town and municipality in Artemisa Province in western Cuba, located about southwest of Havana. The town lies among hills. Guanajay is the twin town of Axtla de Terrazas, Axtla De Terrazas Overview In colonial times it was an acclimatization station for newly arrived troops from Spain, and subsequently became well known as a health resort. Founded in 1650, it was part of the province of Pinar del Río Province, Pinar del Río until 1976. It was then included in La Habana Province until that was divided in two in 2011. The country surrounding Guanajay is a fertile sugarcane and tobacco region, and historically it has been an important distribution point in the commerce of the western end of the island. Bahía Honda, Cuba
Bahía Honda is a municipality and town in the Artemisa Province of Cuba. Before 2011, the municipality belonged to Pinar del Río Province. Overview It is located on the northern shore of the island, in an inlet of the Florida Straits, west of Havana. The sheltered bay that gives the name to the municipality contains an industrial port. It marks the eastern extend of the Colorados Archipelago. Bahía Honda was once one of the naval bases leased to the United States under the Platt Amendment, but abandoned in 1912 in turn for an expansion of the area leased around Guantánamo Bay. Cuban Revolution
The Cuban Revolution ( es, Revolución Cubana) was carried out after the 1952 Cuban coup d'état which placed Fulgencio Batista as head of state and the failed mass strike in opposition that followed. After failing to contest Batista in court, Fidel Castro organized an armed attack on the Cuban military's Moncada Barracks. The rebels were arrested and while in prison formed the 26th of July Movement. After gaining amnesty the M-26-7 rebels organized an expedition from Mexico on the Granma yacht to invade Cuba. In the following years the M-26-7 rebel army would slowly defeat the Cuban army in the countryside, while its urban wing would engage in sabotage and rebel army recruitment. Provinces Of Cuba
Administratively, Cuba is divided into 15 provinces and one special municipality (the Isla de la Juventud). The last modification was approved in August 2010 (by the Cuban National Assembly), splitting Havana province into two new provinces: Artemisa (which incorporates the three eastern municipalities of the neighbour Pinar del Río) and Mayabeque.
